**Arthur Gardner Rankin Sr.**[1] (August 30, 1895 – March 23, 1947) was an American [film actor](/source/Film_actor).[2]

## Personal life

Arthur Rankin was born in New York, the son of actress [Phyllis Rankin](/source/Phyllis_Rankin). She later married actor [Harry Davenport](/source/Harry_Davenport_(actor)), who adopted Arthur.[3] He was the nephew of [Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Drew](/source/Mr._and_Mrs._Sidney_Drew). Rankin served in the [United States Marine Corps](/source/United_States_Marine_Corps) during [World War I](/source/World_War_I), and received a medical discharge in 1918. He then joined the British Army. During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), Rankin rejoined the Marine Corps.[4] Rankin married Marian Mansfield,[5] and they had two sons, one of them being animator [Arthur Rankin Jr.](/source/Arthur_Rankin_Jr.) He died on March 22, 1947, of a cerebral hemorrhage.[4]
