# Arthur Pain

**Arthur Wellesley Pain** (21 August 1841 – 14 May 1920) was an Anglican bishop and the first [Bishop](/source/Bishop) of [Gippsland](/source/Diocese_of_Gippsland) from 1902 until 1917.[1]

Born in [Felmersham](/source/Felmersham) and educated at [St Catharine's College, Cambridge](/source/St_Catharine's_College,_Cambridge),[2] he was [ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1866.[3] He began his career as [curate](/source/Curate) of [Holbrook, Suffolk](/source/Holbrook,_Suffolk) before emigrating to [Australia](/source/Australia) two years later as incumbent of [Cobbitty, New South Wales](/source/Cobbitty,_New_South_Wales).[4] His next appointment was as [Vicar](/source/Vicar) of [Narellan, NSW](/source/Narellan,_New_South_Wales) then [Rural Dean](/source/Rural_Dean) of [Camden](/source/Camden,_New_South_Wales). In 1883 he was appointed [rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of St. John's, [Darlinghurst](/source/Darlinghurst,_New_South_Wales), in East Sydney, and in 1893 chaplain to [Saumarez Smith](/source/Saumarez_Smith), [Bishop of Sydney](/source/Anglican_Archbishop_of_Sydney). From 1897 he was [canon](/source/Canon_(priest)) of [St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney](/source/St._Andrew's_Cathedral,_Sydney).[5]

It was announced in April 1902 that Pain would be appointed the first [Bishop of Gippsland](/source/Anglican_Bishop_of_Gippsland),[5] and his ordination to the [episcopate](/source/Episcopate) came when he was consecrated the following month.[6][7]
