**Paul Arthur Müller-Lehning** (23 October 1899 – 1 January 2000) was a Dutch author, historian and anarchist.

## Biography

Arthur Lehning was born in the Dutch city of [Utrecht](/source/Utrecht) on 23 October 1899. He studied in [Berlin](/source/Berlin), where he was first introduced to [anarchism](/source/Anarchism) and became involved in [prisoner support](/source/Prisoner_support) activism, aiding anarchist political prisoners in the nascent [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union). In 1922, he joined the [International Anti-Militarist Bureau](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=International_Anti-Militarist_Bureau&action=edit&redlink=1) (IAMB) and the [International Workers' Association](/source/IWA-AIT) (IWA), within which he advanced the proposal of using a [general strike](/source/General_strike) as a means to end wars. In 1927, he joined the press service of the International Anti-Militarist Commission, which resulted from a collaboration between the IAMB and IWA.[2] He also published the *i10* art magazine, which drew contributions from numerous prominent artists.[3]

Lehning was appointed as secretary of the IWA in 1932 and served in this post until 1935. The following year, he travelled to Spain to witness the [Spanish Revolution of 1936](/source/Spanish_Revolution_of_1936). At the outbreak of [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he oversaw the transfer of the archives of the [International Institute of Social History](/source/International_Institute_of_Social_History) (IISG) from [Amsterdam](/source/Amsterdam) to [Oxford](/source/Oxford), where they remained until the [liberation of the Netherlands](/source/Netherlands_in_World_War_II#Liberation) in 1945. Over the 1960s and 1970s, he edited the collected works of [Mikhail Bakunin](/source/Mikhail_Bakunin).[2]

Lehnin died in France on 1 January 2000.[2]
