He was born in [Rangoon, Burma](/source/Rangoon%2C_Burma), British India,<ref>''New York State, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1917-1967''</ref><ref>''India, Select Births and Baptisms, 1786-1947''</ref> to Arthur Gaitskell (1870–1915), of the [Indian Civil Service](/source/Indian_Civil_Service), and Adelaide Mary ({{nee}} Jamieson) Gaitskell (died 1956), whose father, George Jamieson, was [consul-general](/source/consul-general) in Shanghai and prior to that had been Judge of the [British Supreme Court for China and Japan](/source/British_Supreme_Court_for_China_and_Japan). His brother was [Hugh Gaitskell](/source/Hugh_Gaitskell).
