He was educated at [St. Mary's School, Melrose](/source/St._Mary's_School%2C_Melrose), and [Sedbergh School](/source/Sedbergh_School) in Cumbria, where he was head boy. Dorward proceeded to [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College%2C_Cambridge), where he graduated with a degree in French and German.
