He was an MP from 1996 to 1999, and again from 2000 to 2002. He was part of the [National Party](/source/New_Zealand_National_Party), being its first [Pasifika](/source/Pasifika_New_Zealanders) MP.

==Early life==
Anae, who was born in 1945, is [Samoan](/source/Samoan_New_Zealander), although he was born in [Fiji](/source/Fiji). When [Don McKinnon](/source/Don_McKinnon) resigned, however, Anae entered Parliament as his replacement. Anae first stood for [Auckland City Council](/source/Auckland_City_Council) in the [1987 local elections](/source/1987_New_Zealand_local_elections).<ref name="vote for me" /> In October 2004 he was elected to the [Manukau City Council](/source/Manukau_City_Council) from the [Ōtara](/source/%C5%8Ctara) ward. In the [2010 Auckland Council election](/source/2010_Auckland_Council_election) Anae was elected from the [Manukau ward](/source/Manukau_ward) to serve in the newly formed Auckland Council and served as the chair of the council's economic forum. In mid-February 2026, Anae led a delegation presenting a 45,000-strong petition to the [New Zealand Parliament](/source/New_Zealand_Parliament) urging the New Zealand Government to ease visa requirements for nationals from Pacific Islands countries.
