Pennington played for the [Chicago American Giants](/source/Chicago_American_Giants) (1941–1945, 1950), the [Birmingham Black Barons](/source/Birmingham_Black_Barons) (1945), as well as in the [Mexican Baseball League](/source/Mexican_Baseball_League) (1946–1948), the U.S. [minor league](/source/Minor_league_baseball) system (1949, 1952–1954, 1958–1959), and in [Cuban](/source/Baseball_in_Cuba) and [Venezuelan](/source/History_of_baseball_outside_the_United_States) leagues.

Pennington retired from [Rockwell Collins](/source/Rockwell_Collins) in 1985; his house was badly damaged in a 2008 flood that destroyed most of his personal baseball memorabilia.

He is included as card # 97 in the [Topps](/source/Topps) 2009 [Allen & Ginter](/source/Allen_%26_Ginter) baseball card nostalgia set.

His Great Grandfather is David Newton Pennington a Methodist minister and Confederate Veteran. His 4th Great Grandfather is Cherokee Chief Joseph Tuttle. He is a Descended from the British monarchy.
