# Arnie Gelbart

**Arnie Gelbart** is a [Belgian](/source/Belgium)-[Canadian](/source/Canada) film and television producer, who founded the Galafilm studio in 1990.[1]

Born in [Brussels](/source/Brussels) and raised in [Montreal](/source/Montreal), [Quebec](/source/Quebec), he began his career in film as an assistant director on [Luis Buñuel](/source/Luis_Bu%C3%B1uel)'s 1972 film *[The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie](/source/The_Discreet_Charm_of_the_Bourgeoisie)*.[2] He was a co-founder of Cleo 24 in the 1980s,[3] before launching Galafilm in 1990.

He has produced both narrative and documentary film and television. His most noted productions have included the [Gemini Award](/source/Gemini_Award)-winning documentary series *[The Valour and the Horror](/source/The_Valour_and_the_Horror)*, and the film *[Lilies](/source/Lilies_(film))*, a [Genie Award](/source/Genie_Award) winner for [Best Motion Picture](/source/Canadian_Screen_Award_for_Best_Motion_Picture).[4] He has also been a screenwriter, most notably on the films *[Bayo](/source/Bayo_(film))* and *[The Gunrunner](/source/The_Gunrunner_(film))*, and has directed a number of short documentary films.

He was inducted as a member of the [Order of Canada](/source/Order_of_Canada) in 2024.[5]
