'''Ark Charter Academy''' (formerly St Luke's CofE VA Secondary School) is a [co-educational](/source/Mixed-sex_education) [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England) [secondary school](/source/secondary_school) and [sixth form](/source/sixth_form). The school is located in the [Landport](/source/Landport) area of [Portsmouth](/source/Portsmouth) in the [English county](/source/English_county) of [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/ |title=Home |publisher=Charter Academy |access-date=2013-11-04}}</ref>

==History==
St Luke's School was first established in 1865 as a [sunday school](/source/sunday_school) for boys. It began to offer more general secondary education for boys and girls in 1922. During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), pupils attending the school were largely evacuated to the [Isle of Wight](/source/Isle_of_Wight), however the school remained open for the remaining students. The school buildings suffered from extensive bomb damage during the war, and new buildings were constructed during the 1960s. This allowed for a significant expansion in the schools capacity.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/ourhistory |title=Our History |publisher=Charter Academy |access-date=2013-11-04 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131105003257/http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/ourhistory |archive-date=2013-11-05 }}</ref>

St Luke's went through a period of decline during the 1990s and 2000s, with pupils continuously achieving some of the poorest results in the UK. The school was put into special measures by [Ofsted](/source/Ofsted), and the school was threatened with closure. St Luke's was reopened as Charter Academy in September 2009, becoming one of the first schools to become an [academy](/source/Academy_(English_school)). The school brought in a head teacher with experience of tackling poor achievement and behaviour in London schools. They also recruited a team of ex Royal Navy sailors as pastoral support to provide discipline. Results at the school have significantly improved from being to in the bottom 3% of schools nationally with no pupils achieve 5 A*-Cs to 68% of its pupils now achieving those grades placing it above the national average and making it one of the top three schools in the city.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/the-children-used-to-throw-chairs-at-people-out-of-the-window-how-a-failing-school-was-turned-round-9039183.html|title = 'The children used to throw chairs at people out of the window': How A|date = 4 January 2014}}</ref> The school was later rebranded Ark Charter Academy

Ark Charter Academy is sponsored by [Ark](/source/Ark_(charity)) and the [Anglican Diocese of Portsmouth](/source/Anglican_Diocese_of_Portsmouth). Though it is a Church of England school, Ark Charter Academy operates a non-selective intake policy from a catchment area rather than selecting on religious background. The school offers [GCSEs](/source/General_Certificate_of_Secondary_Education), [BTECs](/source/Business_and_Technology_Education_Council) and [OCR Nationals](/source/OCR_Nationals) as programmes of study for pupils,<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/overview |title=Overview |publisher=Charter Academy |access-date=2013-11-04 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131105003303/http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/overview |archive-date=2013-11-05 }}</ref> while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of [A-level](/source/A-level)s.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://charteracademy.org.uk/sixth-form|title=Sixth form | Charter Academy}}</ref> The school also has specialisms in mathematics and performing arts.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/ourspecialisms |title=Our Specialisms |publisher=Charter Academy |access-date=2013-11-04 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131105002355/http://www.charteracademy.org.uk/ourspecialisms |archive-date=2013-11-05 }}</ref>
