# Aris Argiris

**Argyrios Papagiannopoulos** (Greek: Αργύριος Παπαγιαννοπουλος;[1] born 20 December 1974, in [Athens](/source/Athens), known professionally as **Aris Argiris**; Greek: Άρης Αργύρης),[1] is a Greek operatic baritone and vocal pedagoge. Initially known for his portrayals of *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)*, Giorgio Germont in *[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)*, Escamillo in *[Carmen](/source/Carmen)*, and Figaro in *[The Barber of Seville](/source/The_Barber_of_Seville)*, he is now also known for main Verdi roles such as *[Rigoletto](/source/Rigoletto)*, *[Nabucco](/source/Nabucco)*, Amonasro in *[Aida](/source/Aida)* and Iago in *[Otello](/source/Otello)* as well as Wagner's Wotan in *[Das Rheingold](/source/Das_Rheingold)*, *[Die Walküre](/source/Die_Walk%C3%BCre)* and *[Siegfried](/source/Siegfried)*.

## Life and education

Argiris was born Argyrios Papagiannopoulos in Athens[2] on December 20, 1974.[3] He has been involved with music since the age of 11.[3] Argiris studied [Saxophone](/source/Saxophone),[4] and [music theory](/source/Music_theory),[3] and received a diploma in [counterpoint](/source/Counterpoint).[4] He was in the university choir where he met professional singers who encouraged him to take voice lessons in December 1993.[4] In January 1994 he joined the opera chorus of the [Greek National Opera](/source/Greek_National_Opera), while he continued to study marketing,[2] Italian and English at the same time.[4] He studied singing under [Kostas Paskalis](/source/Kostas_Paskalis), Frangiskos Voutsinos, and Despina Kalafati,[5] and joined the [master class](/source/Master_class) of Gabriella Ravazzi in [Orvieto](/source/Orvieto), Italy in 1996.[6] His first engagements as soloist where in small roles at the Greek National Opera in Athens in 1997.[7][3] In 1999,[5] he received the [Maria Callas](/source/Maria_Callas) Scholarship,[1] which supports the study abroad of young Greek singers,[1] enabling him to continue his vocal studies in the master class by Greek mezzo-soprano [Daphne Evangelatos](/source/Daphne_Evangelatos) at the [University of Music and Theatre Munich](/source/University_of_Music_and_Theatre_Munich).[5] He also studied with [Josef Metternich](/source/Josef_Metternich).[8] During his studies, he performed in concerts and productions at venues such as the [Prinzregententheater](/source/Prinzregententheater) in Munich and the [Gewandhaus](/source/Gewandhaus) in Leipzig.[6]

## Career

Early in his career Argiris used his legal last name Papagiannopoulos.[9] With this name he appeared as Filiberto on a live recording of Rossini's *[Il Signor Bruschino](/source/Il_Signor_Bruschino)* conducted by [Gustav Kuhn](/source/Gustav_Kuhn), and as Escamillo in Bizet's *[Carmen](/source/Carmen)*, conducted by [Nikos Athineos](/source/Nikos_Athineos) at the [Thessaloniki Concert Hall](/source/Thessaloniki_Concert_Hall) in 2001,[10] as Belcore in Donizetti's *[L'elisir d'amore](/source/L'elisir_d'amore)* with the [Greek National Opera](/source/Greek_National_Opera) at the [Olympia Theatre](/source/Olympia_City_Music_Theatre_%22Maria_Callas%22) in Athens,[9][11] and in the titel role in Mozart's *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)* at the [Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg](/source/Kammeroper_Schloss_Rheinsberg) festival in the summer of 2002, which he had won in the international competition.[12][6] Argiris was also credited as Aris Papagiannopoulos when he sang Lazar in the world premiere of [Alexander Mullenbach](/source/Alexander_Mullenbach)'s *Die Todesbrücke*,[13] a co-production of the [Musiktheater im Revier](/source/Musiktheater_im_Revier), Théâtre National du Luxembourg and the [Grand Théâtre de la ville de Luxembourg](/source/Grand_Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_Luxembourg).[14] Working at the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen in 2002 led to Argiris' engagement in the theater's soloists ensemble.[15]

Two years later, Argiris joined the ensemble of the [Theater Dortmund](/source/Theater_Dortmund),[16] where he appeared as Guglielmo in Mozart's *[Così fan tutte](/source/Cos%C3%AC_fan_tutte)* conducted by [Dirk Kaftan](/source/Dirk_Kaftan),[17] as Donner in Wagner's *[Das Rheingold](/source/Das_Rheingold)* alongside [Wolfgang Koch](/source/Wolfgang_Koch) as Wotan, [Jeff Martin](/source/Jeff_Martin_(tenor)) as Mime, and [Annette Seiltgen](/source/Annette_Seiltgen) as Fricka in the staging by [Christine Mielitz](/source/Christine_Mielitz).[18] In Dortmund, Argiris also made his role debut as Giorgio Germont in Verdi's *[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)*,[16] conducted by Kaftan.[18] With the same role he made his [Theater Bonn](/source/Theater_Bonn) debut in a staging by [Andreas Homoki](/source/Andreas_Homoki)[3] in the 2005/2006 season,[16][19] which led to him joining the Theater Bonn ensemble in the 2006/07 season.[16][7] At this time, he was already contracted to join [Oper Frankfurt](/source/Oper_Frankfurt) in the 2008/09 season.[20] His role debuts in Bonn included Almaviva in *[Le nozze di Figaro](/source/Le_nozze_di_Figaro)*,[3] Enrico in *[Lucia di Lammermoor](/source/Lucia_di_Lammermoor)*,[21] and Valentin in Gounod's *[Faust](/source/Faust_(Gounod))* with the [Beethoven Orchester Bonn](/source/Beethoven_Orchester_Bonn) conducted by Wolfgang Lischke, directed by [Vera Nemirova](/source/Vera_Nemirova) in 2008.[22]

Argiris received an honorary distinction for Best New Artist by the Union of Greek Theater and Music Critics at the [Athens Concert Hall](/source/Athens_Concert_Hall) in 2007,[23][3] and returned to the Schloss Rheinsberg Festival in the first of the *Benefiz-Recitals* performed by festival alumni.[24] He is considered one of the best known "Rheinsberg Career" singers.[25] He left Theater Bonn to join the ensemble of Oper Frankfurt in the season 2008/09 as planned,[6] and made his house debut as *Don Giovanni*.[26] In Frankfurt he performed the Puccini roles of Marcello in *[La bohème](/source/La_boh%C3%A8me)*, Guglielmo in *[Le villi](/source/Le_villi)*, Rambaldo Fernandez in *[La rondine](/source/La_rondine)*, the Verdi roles of Francesco in *[I masnadieri](/source/I_masnadieri)* and Rodrigo in *[Don Carlo](/source/Don_Carlos)*, Germont in *La traviata*, as well as Enrico in Donizetti's *Lucia di Lammermoor*, Dandini in Rossini's *[La Cenerentola](/source/La_Cenerentola)*, Ramiro in Ravel's *[L'heure espagnole](/source/L'heure_espagnole)*, and Lindorf in Offenbach's *[Les contes d'Hoffmann](/source/The_Tales_of_Hoffmann)*.[21]

*Carmen in 3D*, the first [3D](/source/3D_film) opera film, featured Argiris as Escamillo, [Christine Rice](/source/Christine_Rice) as Carmen, [Bryan Hymel](/source/Bryan_Hymel) as Don José, and [Maija Kovalevska](/source/Maija_Kovalevska) as Micaëla in [Francesca Zambello](/source/Francesca_Zambello)'s staging from 2006.[27] It was recorded 2010 at the [Royal Opera House](/source/Royal_Opera_House) in London, and conducted by [Constantinos Carydis](/source/Constantinos_Carydis).[27] The [stereoscopic](/source/Stereoscopy) film premiered as a special event at the [Santa Barbara International Film Festival](/source/Santa_Barbara_International_Film_Festival) 2011,[28] and was released on home media.

Argiris left the Oper Frankfurt ensemble after the 2010/2011 season,[29] and made his debuts at Arena di Verona as Figaro in *[Il barbiere di Siviglia](/source/Il_barbiere_di_Siviglia)*,[30] as Renato in *[Un ballo in maschera](/source/Un_ballo_in_maschera)* in St. Petersburg, and at the [New National Theatre Tokyo](/source/New_National_Theatre_Tokyo) as Marcello in *La bohème*.[30]

In 2013 Argiris made his debut as Lescaut in [Mariusz Treliński](/source/Mariusz_Treli%C5%84ski)'s staging of *[Manon Lescaut](/source/Manon_Lescaut_(Puccini))* with [Eva-Maria Westbroek](/source/Eva-Maria_Westbroek) as Manon and [Brandon Jovanovich](/source/Brandon_Jovanovich) as Des Grieux at [La Monnaie](/source/La_Monnaie), a co-production with [Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa](/source/Grand_Theatre,_Warsaw) and [Welsh National Opera](/source/Welsh_National_Opera),[31] which was live streamed to movie theaters in Belgium and France,[31] and made available to watch on streaming services.[32]

He was Escamillo in Nicola Berloffa's staging of *Carmen* at the [Theater St. Gallen](/source/Theater_St._Gallen) in 2014, with [Alex Penda](/source/Alexandrina_Pendatchanska) in the titel role, Ladislav Elgr as Don José and [Cristina Pasaroiu](/source/Cristina_Pasaroiu) as Micaëla.[33] Footage from the rehearsals was used in the documentary *Loving Carmen*.[34]

Argiris then returned to the Musiktheater im Revier for his debut as *[Rigoletto](/source/Rigoletto)* in 2015 in a staging by the theater's intendant Michael Schulz, conducted by [Generalmusikdirektor](/source/Generalmusikdirektor) (GMD) Rasmus Baumann.[15] His performance as The Ruler in Korngold's *[Das Wunder der Heliane](/source/Das_Wunder_der_Heliane)*, performed in concert at Theater Freiburg in 2017 with Annemarie Kremer as Heliane, [Ian Storey](/source/Ian_Storey) as the Stranger and the [Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg](/source/Philharmonisches_Orchester_Freiburg) conducted by [Fabrice Bollon](/source/Fabrice_Bollon), was released on CD in 2018.[35]

When Argiris made his debut as Wotan in *[Die Walküre](/source/Die_Walk%C3%BCre)* at the [Theater Chemnitz](/source/Theater_Chemnitz) in 2018,[36] he became the first Greek baritone to perform this role on its stage.[37] Siegmund was sung by Zoltán Nyári, Fricka by Monika Bohinec, [Dara Hobbs](/source/Dara_Hobbs) was Brünnhilde, [Christiane Kohl](/source/Christiane_Kohl) was Sieglinde, the staging was by Monique Wagemakers, the conductor was Felix Bender.[36]

Argiris performed as Iago in *[Otello](/source/Otello)* at Opera di Montreal, as Amonasro in *[Aida](/source/Aida)* at Gärtnerplatztheater München and with the Athens Festival at Herodes Atticus.[30] He sang Orest in the German version of Gluck's *[Iphigenie auf Taurus](/source/Iphig%C3%A9nie_en_Tauride)* by [Richard Strauss](/source/Richard_Strauss) at the Gluck International Festival, Scarpia in *[Tosca](/source/Tosca)* at the Musiktheater im Revier, Figaro at Semperoper Dresden, Paolo in *[Simon Boccanegra](/source/Simon_Boccanegra)* at Vlaamse Opera and Les Theatres de la Villes de Luxembourg, Sharpless in *[Madama Butterfly](/source/Madama_Butterfly)* at Theatre de la Monnaie, Wotan at Theater an der Wien and Theater Chemnitz, Rigoletto at Scottish Opera, Jochanaan in *[Salome](/source/Salome_(opera))* at Theater Bern, Escamillo at Staatsoper Hamburg, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli and the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Francesco in *I masnadieri* at Aalto Musiktheater, Renato at San Diego Opera, Nardo in *[La finta giardiniera](/source/La_finta_giardiniera)* at Staatsoper Berlin, and he sang in concerts with the [Israel Philharmonic Orchestra](/source/Israel_Philharmonic_Orchestra) under [Zubin Mehta](/source/Zubin_Mehta).[29][30]

During the first lockdown of the [COVID-19 Pandemic](/source/COVID-19_pandemic) in early 2020, Argiris initiated an interview series in collaboration with Detlef Obens, the editor of the German online magazine *Das Opernmagazin*,[38] in which his artistic peers reported on their "perspective and experiences during this time of crisis".[39] At Obens' recommendation, Argiris was invited to represent opera in episodes of *B.o.B. – Berühren ohne Berührung*, a weekly broadcast of live music performances.[37][40]

In 2021, Argiris returned to Chemnitz to sing Wotan in *[Das Rheingold](/source/Das_Rheingold)*, *Die Walküre*, and *[Siegfried](/source/Siegfried)*.[21]

Argiris made his European debut as Iago in Verdi's *Otello* in 2024,[4] alongside [Gaston Rivero](/source/Gaston_Rivero) who made his debut at the [Staatstheater Darmstadt](/source/Staatstheater_Darmstadt) in the title role,[41] and [Megan Marie Hart](/source/Megan_Marie_Hart), who made her role debut as Desdemona.[42] Darmstadt's GMD [Daniel Cohen](/source/Daniel_Cohen_(conductor)) conducted, the director was [Paul-Georg Dittrich](/source/Paul-Georg_Dittrich).[41] While reviewers praised the singers and orchestra,[43] they reacted negatively to Dittrich's staging.[41][43] Argiris returned to Darmstadt in 2025 to sing Amonasro in *[Aida](/source/Aida)*, with Hart in the title role, [Matthew Vickers](/source/Matthew_Vickers) as Radamès and Irina Ignata as Amneris,[44] in a co-production between the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the [Finnish National Opera](/source/Finnish_National_Opera_and_Ballet) directed by Noa Naamat[45] and conducted by [first Kapellmeister](/source/Kapellmeister#Contemporary_usage) and deputy GMD Johannes Zahn.[46] The production opened Darmstadt's 2025/2026 season and received enthusiastic reviews.[47]

Since 2016, Argiris is professor for voice at the [Berlin University of the Arts](/source/Berlin_University_of_the_Arts),[4] where he teaches all voice types.[8] He held master class seminars in Greece in collaboration with the Maria Callas Scholarship Association, which had been influential in his own career.[48] According to Argiris, his wife mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Larzabal was his first student.[30] Together, they had a voice studio in Bonn, where they live with their two daughters.[30]
