# Arif Ali

**Arif Ali** (21 June 1961 – 31 January 2008) was a [Pakistani](/source/Pakistani)-born British publisher and journalist. He was the regional product director for the [Associated Press](/source/Associated_Press) [news agency](/source/News_agency) in [Europe](/source/Europe), [Middle East](/source/Middle_East) and [Africa](/source/Africa).[1]

## Early years

Arif Ali was born on 21 June 1961, in [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan).[2]

## Career

He first became employed at the AP [London](/source/London) [bureau](/source/News_bureau) in October 1982 as a field service [technician](/source/Technician).[1] Ali often worked on risky assignments for the AP, including as a technical operations technician in [Somalia](/source/Somalia) in the early 1990s as the country collapsed in interclan warfare.[1] His main tasks at this time in his career were keeping [satellite phones](/source/Satellite_phone), [satellite](/source/Satellite) systems and power [generators](/source/Electric_generator) working so that AP [reporters](/source/Reporters) could file reports for the [wire service](/source/Wire_service) from remote locations such as Somalia.[1]

Ali also managed a wide range of AP technical projects during his career with the organization.[1] Ali managed the Associated Press [Server](/source/Server_(computing)) from 1995 until 2003.[1] He also served as the [product manager](/source/Product_manager) for the project manager for [AP Photo Archive](/source/AP_Photo_Archive) from 1995 to 1999 before being promoted to [director](/source/Management) of [photo](/source/Photo) [technology](/source/Technology) from 1999 to 2003.[1] Additionally, Ali worked as product manager for the [content management systems](/source/Content_management_system) eAP and eDistribute in 2003 and 2004.[1]

Ali also oversaw the technical operations coordination for large, special events covered by the AP, such as the [1998 Winter Olympics](/source/1998_Winter_Olympics) in [Nagano, Japan](/source/Nagano,_Nagano), and the [2000 Summer Olympics](/source/2000_Summer_Olympics) in [Sydney, Australia](/source/Sydney,_Australia).[1]

In 2006 and 2007, Ali guided the creation of a new AP [Arabic](/source/Arabic) [text](/source/Text_messaging) service.[1]

Also in 2007, he was honored with the [Gramling Award](/source/Gramling_Award), the Associated Press' top staff award for overseeing the creation and implementation of new AP services.[1]

## Death

Arif Ali died at his home in London on 31 January 2008 at the age of 46.[1] His funeral was held in [Slough](/source/Slough), United Kingdom.[1]
