**Ariel Vanguardia** (born September 29, 1972) is a Filipino professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) coach who currently serves as the assistant coach for the [Vanguard Lions](/source/Vanguard_Lions) of the [Pacific West Conference](/source/Pacific_West_Conference).

## Early life and education

Hailing from [Calamba, Laguna](/source/Calamba%2C_Laguna)[1], Ariel Vanguardia was born on September 29, 1972.[2] Vanguardia attended the [De La Salle University](/source/De_La_Salle_University) where he obtained a degree in business management.[1] He played for the team B of the [De La Salle Green Archers](/source/De_La_Salle_Green_Archers_basketball) and was a contributor for the school paper, *[The LaSallian](/source/The_LaSallian)*.[3]

He briefly managed a printing press shop and a video rental store in 1996 until he began focusing on coaching.[1]

## Coaching career

### Assistant

Vanguardia formerly served as an assistant coach for [Benilde Blazers](/source/Benilde_Blazers_basketball) under [Adriano Go](/source/Adriano_Go).[4]

He served as an assistant coach for [Talk 'N Text Phone Pals](/source/TNT_Tropang_Giga), and served as an interim when [Joel Banal](/source/Joel_Banal) was coaching [Ateneo](/source/Ateneo_Blue_Eagles_men's_basketball). Vanguardia's tenure as interim marred of playing controversy, including players of the Phone Pals who intentionally playing or not scoring points.[5]

### JRU Heavy Bombers

He served as head coach of [JRU Heavy Bombers](/source/JRU_Heavy_Bombers_basketball), and led them into a finals appearance in [2008](/source/NCAA_Season_84_basketball_tournaments).[6] But due to a final four fail in [2009](/source/NCAA_Season_85_basketball_tournaments), he was replaced by [Vergel Meneses](/source/Vergel_Meneses).[7]

After coaching Bombers, he served as an assistant for [Barako Bull](/source/Barako_Bull_Energy_Boosters) from 2009 to 2010.[8]

### Westports Malaysia Dragons

He previously coached the [Westports Malaysia Dragons](/source/Westports_Malaysia_Dragons) in the [Asean Basketball League](/source/Asean_Basketball_League), where he won the team's first championship in 2016.[9] On May 31, 2016, it was announced that he was appointed to his first PBA head coaching job as coach of the PBA team [Phoenix Fuel Masters](/source/Phoenix_Fuel_Masters), replacing [Koy Banal](/source/Koy_Banal).[10]

### Blu Detergent Dragons

He also took over as team consultant of Blu Star Detergent Dragons, a team composed of the players of the Dragons in the [2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup](/source/2016_PBA_D-League_Foundation_Cup).[11][12]

### Blackwater Bossing

In 2021, he was hired by [Blackwater Bossing](/source/Blackwater_Bossing) as their head coach, replacing [Nash Racela](/source/Nash_Racela) but for interim basis.[13][8] He was replaced by [Jefferey Cariaso](/source/Jeffrey_Cariaso) in 2023.[14]

### Assistant for Atlanta Hawks

For the [2024 NBA Summer League](/source/2024_NBA_Summer_League), Vanguardia became part of the [Atlanta Hawks](/source/Atlanta_Hawks) as an assistant coach and scout.[15][16]

### Vanguard Lions

Vanguardia was named part of the staff of the [Vanguard Lions](/source/Vanguard_Lions) for the 2025–26 season.[17][18]
