**Argithea** ([Greek](/source/Greek_language): Αργιθέα, [romanized](/source/Romanization_of_Greek): *Argithéa*) is a village and a historic municipality in the [Karditsa regional unit](/source/Karditsa_(regional_unit)) of [Greece](/source/Greece). The seat of the municipality is in [Anthiro](/source/Anthiro).[2] The name derives from ἀργός + θέα (argós + théa, “white view”).

- [Acheloos](/source/Acheloos_(municipality))

- [Anatoliki Argithea](/source/Anatoliki_Argithea)

- Argithea

The municipality has an area of 372.877 km2, the municipal unit 150.377 km2.[3]

## History

Anciently, Argithea or **Argethia** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Ἀργεθία) was the capital of [Athamania](/source/Athamania) straddling the border between [Ancient Epirus](/source/Ancient_Epirus) and [Ancient Thessaly](/source/Ancient_Thessaly), to the left of the main stream of the [Achelous River](/source/Achelous_River).[4] The first evidence we have of the place is [epigraphic](/source/Epigraphy). In the fourth century BCE, the appointment of a [proxenos](/source/Proxenos) of Argithea is documented. Circa 230-220 BCE, a [theorodokoi](/source/Theorodokoi) for the city is appointed to receive [theoroi](/source/Theoroi) from [Delphi](/source/Delphi).[5] It was also a [polis](/source/Polis) (city-state).[5]

In the time of [Livy](/source/Livy) it was the capital of Athamania. In the year 189 BCE. there was a rebellion by the [Athamanians](/source/Athamanians) to try to reestablish [Amynander of Athamania](/source/Amynander_of_Athamania) in power, which the help of the [Aetolian League](/source/Aetolian_League) and this rebellion succeeded in expelling the garrison left by [Philip V of Macedon](/source/Philip_V_of_Macedon). Later Philip sent more troops against Argithea in an attempt to recover the city, but the effort failed.[6]

The editors of the [Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World](/source/Barrington_Atlas_of_the_Greek_and_Roman_World) and [Mogens Herman Hansen](/source/Mogens_Herman_Hansen) locate the ancient city at the modern village of [Ellinika](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ellinika,_Karditsa&action=edit&redlink=1) (or *Hellenika*) in the community of Hellenika, municipal unit and municipality of Argithea.[7][5] Ellinika is located at [39°22′54″N 21°23′30″E / 39.38167°N 21.39167°E / 39.38167; 21.39167](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Argithea&params=39_22_54_N_21_23_30_E_).
