The population was 844 at the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census). The village is located within the [Town of Arena](/source/Arena_(town)%2C_Wisconsin). It is part of the [Madison](/source/Madison%2C_Wisconsin) [Metropolitan Statistical Area](/source/Madison%2C_Wisconsin_metropolitan_area). ## Geography Arena is located at [43°9′57″N 89°54′26″W / 43.16583°N 89.90722°W / 43.16583; -89.90722](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Arena,_Wisconsin¶ms=43_9_57_N_89_54_26_W_type:city) (43.166108, -89.907305).[5] According to the [United States Census Bureau](/source/United_States_Census_Bureau), the village has a total area of 1.16 square miles (3.00 km2), of which 1.15 square miles (2.98 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[6] ## Demographics Historical population Census Pop. The [population density](/source/Population_density) was 725.2 inhabitants per square mile (280.0/km2). There were 354 housing units at an average density of 307.8 per square mile (118.8/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.8% [White](/source/White_(U.S._Census)), 0.2% [African American](/source/African_American_(U.S._Census)), 0.1% [Native American](/source/Native_American_(U.S._Census)), 0.5% [Asian](/source/Asian_(U.S._Census)), 0.2% [Pacific Islander](/source/Race_(U.S._Census)), 0.5% from [other races](/source/Race_(U.S._Census)), and 0.6% from two or more races. [Hispanic](/source/Hispanic_(U.S._Census)) or [Latino](/source/Latino_(U.S._Census)) of any race were 1.8% of the population. There were 323 households, of which 39.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were [married couples](/source/Marriage) living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 31.9% were non-families. 26.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.14. The median age in the village was 33.4 years. 29.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 33.2% were from 25 to 44; 22.7% were from 45 to 64; and 7.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 50.7% male and 49.3% female. ### 2000 census As of the [census](/source/Census)[4] of 2000, there were 685 people, 256 households, and 182 families living in the village. The [population density](/source/Population_density) was 628.5 people per square mile (242.6/km2). There were 269 housing units at an average density of 246.8 per square mile (95.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.54% [White](/source/White_(U.S._Census)), 1.31% [Asian](/source/Asian_(U.S._Census)), and 0.15% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population were [Hispanic](/source/Hispanic) or [Latino](/source/Hispanic_and_Latino_Americans) of any race. There were 256 households, out of which 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were [married couples](/source/Marriage) living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.14. In the village, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 35.2% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females, there were 106.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.4 males. The median income for a household in the village was $45,870, and the median income for a family was $49,375. Males had a median income of $31,953 versus $24,688 for females. None of the families and 3.7% of the population were living below the [poverty line](/source/Poverty_line), including no under eighteens and 11.1% of those over 64. ## Education Arena Elementary School, which closed in 2018 Arena is served by the [River Valley School District](/source/River_Valley_School_District_(Wisconsin)).[9] Students attend school in [Spring Green](/source/Spring_Green%2C_Wisconsin). Arena Elementary School closed in 2018. The distance between the two communities is approximately 10 miles (16 km).[10] The Arena Elementary closure damaged relationships among community residents.
