Area code for central Indiana, U.S.

Area Code map for all of Indiana

**Area code 765** is a telephone [area code](/source/Area_code) in the [North American Numbering Plan](/source/North_American_Numbering_Plan) (NANP) for the central part of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Indiana](/source/Indiana). The numbering plan area comprises a [horseshoe-shaped](/source/Horseshoe-shaped) region of twenty counties in Central Indiana except for the [Indianapolis](/source/Indianapolis) area, which is served by [area codes 317 and 463](/source/Area_codes_317_and_463). Some cities included are [Anderson](/source/Anderson%2C_Indiana), [Connersville](/source/Connersville%2C_Indiana), [Crawfordsville](/source/Crawfordsville%2C_Indiana), [Frankfort](/source/Frankfort%2C_Indiana), [Greencastle](/source/Greencastle%2C_Indiana), [Kokomo](/source/Kokomo%2C_Indiana), [Lafayette](/source/Lafayette%2C_Indiana), [Marion](/source/Marion%2C_Indiana), [Muncie](/source/Muncie%2C_Indiana), [New Castle](/source/New_Castle%2C_Indiana), [Richmond](/source/Richmond%2C_Indiana), and [West Lafayette](/source/West_Lafayette%2C_Indiana). The area code was created in 1997 in a split of area code 317.

## History

In 1947, [American Telephone and Telegraph](/source/American_Telephone_and_Telegraph) (AT&T) published the [first configuration of proposed numbering plan areas](/source/Original_North_American_area_codes) (NPAs) for a new nationwide numbering and toll call routing system. Indiana was divided to receive two area codes. [Area code 317](/source/Area_code_317) served the northern two-thirds of Indiana, while [area code 812](/source/Area_code_812) served the southern third. In the first change of the original plan in 1948, 317 was cut back to central Indiana, while the northern third of Indiana, including [Gary](/source/Gary%2C_Indiana), [Hammond](/source/Hammond%2C_Indiana), [East Chicago](/source/East_Chicago%2C_Indiana), [South Bend](/source/South_Bend%2C_Indiana), [Elkhart](/source/Elkhart%2C_Indiana) and [Fort Wayne](/source/Fort_Wayne), received area code 219.[1]

Prior to 1996, numbering plan area 317 consisted of all of Central Indiana. Eventually, population growth and increased demand for telecommunication services required an [area code split](/source/Split_plan) to provide more central office prefixes for the region. Beginning on February 1, 1997, with mandatory [10-digit dialing](/source/10-digit_dialing) effective June 28, the greater Indianapolis area retained area code 317 and the remainder of Central Indiana received the new area code 765.[2] The creation of 765 came amid some fanfare, as it was Indiana's first new area code in 49 years.
