The numbering plan area (NPA) includes the cities of [Jackson](/source/Jackson%2C_Tennessee), [Tiptonville](/source/Tiptonville%2C_Tennessee), [Savannah](/source/Savannah%2C_Tennessee), [Union City](/source/Union_City%2C_Tennessee), [Dyersburg](/source/Dyersburg%2C_Tennessee), [Lexington](/source/Lexington%2C_Tennessee), [Selmer](/source/Selmer%2C_Tennessee), [Ripley](/source/Ripley%2C_Tennessee), [Martin](/source/Martin%2C_Tennessee), [Brownsville](/source/Brownsville%2C_Tennessee), [Paris](/source/Paris%2C_Tennessee), and [Bolivar](/source/Bolivar%2C_Tennessee).

Area code 731 was created in September 2001 in a split of [area code 901](/source/area_code_901), which was the original area code created for the entire state in 1947. NPA 901 has since been restricted for use in the greater [Memphis metropolitan area](/source/Memphis_metropolitan_area) only.

Prior to October 2021, area code 731 had telephone numbers assigned for the [central office code](/source/central_office_code) 988. In 2020, ''988'' was designated nationwide as a dialing code for the [National Suicide Prevention Lifeline](/source/National_Suicide_Prevention_Lifeline), which created a conflict for exchanges that still permitted [seven-digit dialing](/source/seven-digit_dialing).
