Colorado telephone area code

Numbering plan areas of Colorado (blue) and area codes.[1]

**Area code 719** is a telephone [area code](/source/NPA_code) in the [North American Numbering Plan](/source/North_American_Numbering_Plan) (NANP) for the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Colorado](/source/Colorado). The numbering plan area (NPA) includes [Colorado Springs](/source/Colorado_Springs), [Pueblo](/source/Pueblo%2C_Colorado), [Monument](/source/Monument%2C_Colorado), [Leadville](/source/Leadville), [Alamosa](/source/Alamosa), [Monte Vista](/source/Monte_Vista%2C_Colorado), the [San Luis Valley](/source/San_Luis_Valley), [Cañon City](/source/Ca%C3%B1on_City), [Trinidad](/source/Trinidad%2C_Colorado), [Rocky Ford](/source/Rocky_Ford%2C_Colorado), [La Junta](/source/La_Junta), [Walsenburg](/source/Walsenburg) and southeastern Colorado. It was created in a [split](/source/Split_plan) of [area code 303](/source/Area_code_303) in 1988.

## History

In 1947, the [American Telephone and Telegraph Company](/source/American_Telephone_and_Telegraph_Company) designated the entire state of Colorado as a single [numbering plan area](/source/Numbering_plan_area) in the first nationwide [telephone numbering plan](/source/Telephone_numbering_plan) for [Operator Toll Dialing](/source/Operator_Toll_Dialing). The state was assigned area code 303 as one of the eighty-six [original North American area codes](/source/Original_North_American_area_codes). It remained the state's sole area code for 40 years. By the late 1980s, demand for telephone services, particularly in the Denver/Boulder area, threatened exhaustion of central office prefixes. In mitigation, the numbering area was divided on March 5, 1988, and southeastern Colorado, including [Colorado Springs](/source/Colorado_Springs) and [Pueblo](/source/Pueblo%2C_Colorado), received the new area code 719.[2]

Prior to October 2021, area code 719 had telephone numbers assigned for the [central office code](/source/Central_office_code) 988. In 2020, *988* was designated nationwide as a dialing code for the [National Suicide Prevention Lifeline](/source/National_Suicide_Prevention_Lifeline), which created a conflict for exchanges that permit [seven-digit dialing](/source/Seven-digit_dialing). This area code was therefore scheduled to transition to [ten-digit dialing](/source/Ten-digit_dialing) by October 24, 2021.[3]
