'''Area code 417''' is a telephone [area code](/source/NPA_code) in the [North American Numbering Plan](/source/North_American_Numbering_Plan) (NANP) for the southwestern quadrant of [Missouri](/source/Missouri), including the cities of [Branson](/source/Branson%2C_Missouri), [Carl Junction](/source/Carl_Junction%2C_Missouri), [Carthage](/source/Carthage%2C_Missouri), [Joplin](/source/Joplin%2C_Missouri), [Lebanon](/source/Lebanon%2C_Missouri), [Neosho](/source/Neosho%2C_Missouri), [Nixa](/source/Nixa%2C_Missouri), [Ozark](/source/Ozark%2C_Missouri), [Springfield](/source/Springfield%2C_Missouri), and [West Plains](/source/West_Plains%2C_Missouri). Area code 417 was created in 1950 in a modification of Missouri's numbering plan areas, primarily from [area code 816](/source/area_code_816).

==History==
When the [American Telephone and Telegraph Company](/source/American_Telephone_and_Telegraph_Company) (AT&T) created a universal North American telephone numbering plan for [Operator Toll Dialing](/source/Operator_Toll_Dialing) in 1947, Missouri was divided into two numbering plan areas (NPAs). Area code 816 served points generally north and west of [Columbia](/source/Columbia%2C_Missouri) and [Jefferson City](/source/Jefferson_City), while [area code 314](/source/area_code_314) served the eastern third of the state, including [St. Louis](/source/St._Louis). In 1950, area code 417 was created as the third code in the state, for southwestern Missouri, comprising primarily the southern half of the original 816 area.

Despite the presence of Springfield, the state's third-largest city, 417 is one of the most sparsely populated numbering plan areas in the nation. According to 2025 projections, southwest Missouri will not need another area code until about 2037.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2025 |title=NPA Exhaustion Projections |url=https://www.nanpa.com/sites/default/files/2025-04/2025-1NPAExhaustProjectionsFinal.pdf |website=North American Numbering Plan Administrator}}</ref>

Prior to October 2021, area code 417 had telephone numbers assigned for the [central office code](/source/central_office_code) 988. In 2020, ''988'' was designated nationwide as a dialing code for the [National Suicide Prevention Lifeline](/source/National_Suicide_Prevention_Lifeline), which created a conflict for exchanges that permit [seven-digit dialing](/source/seven-digit_dialing). This area code was therefore scheduled to transition to [ten-digit dialing](/source/ten-digit_dialing) by October 24, 2021.<ref name="pl556">{{cite web
