'''Area code 260''' is a telephone [area code](/source/NPA_code) in the [North American Numbering Plan](/source/North_American_Numbering_Plan) (NANP) for the northeastern part of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Indiana](/source/Indiana). Cities in the service area include [Angola](/source/Angola%2C_Indiana), [Auburn](/source/Auburn%2C_Indiana), [Bluffton](/source/Bluffton%2C_Indiana), [Butler](/source/Butler%2C_Indiana), [Columbia City](/source/Columbia_City%2C_Indiana), [Decatur](/source/Decatur%2C_Indiana), [Fort Wayne](/source/Fort_Wayne), [Huntington](/source/Huntington%2C_Indiana), [New Haven](/source/New_Haven%2C_Indiana), and [Wabash](/source/Wabash%2C_Indiana).

==History==
In 1947, [American Telephone and Telegraph](/source/American_Telephone_and_Telegraph) (AT&T) published the [first configuration of proposed numbering plan areas](/source/original_North_American_area_codes) (NPAs) for a new nationwide numbering and toll call routing system. Indiana was divided to receive two area codes. [Area code 317](/source/Area_code_317) served the northern two-thirds of Indiana, while [area code 812](/source/area_code_812) served the southern third. In the first change of the original plan in 1948, 317 was cut back to central Indiana, while the northern third of Indiana, including Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, [South Bend](/source/South_Bend%2C_Indiana), [Elkhart](/source/Elkhart%2C_Indiana) and [Fort Wayne](/source/Fort_Wayne), received area code 219.<ref>[http://telecomindiana.com/indiana1947.html Telecom Indiana, ''Telecom Information for Indiana, Chicago, and Beyond'']</ref>

Eventual depletion of numbers in [area code 219](/source/area_code_219) in the late 1990s prompted a three-way split of 219. As the result of a random drawing, [northwest Indiana](/source/northwest_Indiana) retained 219, [574](/source/area_code_574) was assigned to north-central Indiana, (including [South Bend](/source/South_Bend%2C_Indiana)), and northeast Indiana received 260. The split took place on January 15, 2002, with mandatory dialing effective five months later.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=1718&phase=check|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090212101510/http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=1718&phase=check|url-status=dead|archive-date=12 February 2009|title=AT&T; - Area Code History - Indiana|date=12 February 2009}}</ref>
