'''Area code 216''' is the telephone [area code](/source/area_code) in the [North American Numbering Plan](/source/North_American_Numbering_Plan) (NANP) for the city of [Cleveland](/source/Cleveland) and most of its inner-ring suburbs in [Cuyahoga County](/source/Cuyahoga_County%2C_Ohio) of the [U.S. state](/source/U.S._state) of [Ohio](/source/Ohio). The area code is one of the [original North American area codes](/source/original_North_American_area_codes) established in 1947.

==History==
thumb|The four original numbering plan areas of Ohio
The [first nationwide telephone numbering plan](/source/original_North_American_area_codes) of 1947 divided telecommunications services in Ohio into four numbering plan areas (NPAs), one for each quadrant of the state. Area code 216 was assigned to the northeastern quadrant, comprising the area from [Lorain](/source/Lorain%2C_Ohio) to [Youngstown](/source/Youngstown%2C_Ohio).

In 1996, the southern portion, including [Akron](/source/Akron%2C_Ohio), [Canton](/source/Canton%2C_Ohio), and Youngstown, received [area code 330](/source/area_code_330), while the eastern and western portions were assigned [area code 440](/source/area_code_440) in 1997. The boundary between 216 and 440 was drawn in such a way that 440 was barely contiguous; the two portions of 440 were only joined by a small section in the south.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.nanpa.com/sites/default/files/planning_letters/PL-045.pdf|publisher=[NANPA](/source/NANPA)|title=Planning letter 15: NANP-Split of 216 (Ohio) Numbering Plan Area (NPA)|date=1997-03-12}}</ref> The eastern and western portions are currently not contiguous.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.nanpa.com/sites/default/files/planning_letters/PL-610.pdf|publisher=[NANPA](/source/NANPA)|title=NPA 436 and 440 All-Services Overlay|date=2023-02-23}}</ref>

Despite comprising a major urban area, 216 has not been [overlaid](/source/overlay_complex) with a second area code (the only area in Ohio where this is the case). Based on projections of 2025, relief will not be needed until 2046.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.nanpa.com/sites/default/files/2025-04/2025-1NPAExhaustProjectionsFinal.pdf|title= 2025-1 NRUF and NPA Exhaust Analysis|publisher=NANPA|access-date=2025-05-18|date=2025-03-01}}</ref>
