# Archaeological Recording Kit

**Archaeological Recording Kit** (ARK) is a [web-based](/source/Web_application), [open source](/source/Open-source_software) software package for recording and disseminating [archaeological](/source/Archaeology) data.[1][2] ARK is primarily designed for recording [excavations](/source/Excavation_(archaeology)), but can also be used for [archaeological surveys](/source/Archaeological_field_survey), [palaeoenvironmental research](/source/Paleoecology) and [collections management](/source/Collections_management_(museum)).[3]

ARK is based on the [LAMP stack](/source/LAMP_(software_bundle)) and [MapServer](/source/MapServer), and is [free software](/source/Free_software) released under the [GNU GPL](/source/GNU_GPL).[4] It was developed by L-P Archaeology, a British [commercial archaeology](/source/Commercial_archaeology) practice.[5][6]

The [Fasti Online](/source/Fasti_Online) project was built using an ARK back-end, and demonstrates its usage beyond normal archaeological recording.[7]
