His career was short, and he only played for six weeks for the [Detroit Tigers](/source/Detroit_Tigers) in 1902 and did not return for the following season.  He debuted on August 14, 1902, at the age of 21 and played through the end of the [1902 Detroit Tigers season](/source/1902_Detroit_Tigers_season) until September 18. McCarthy [pitched](/source/games_pitched) in 10 games during his six weeks for the Detroit Tigers, and he accumulated a [win-loss record](/source/win_(baseball)) of 2–7 and a fairly high [earned run average](/source/earned_run_average) of 6.13.  He had only 10 [strikeout](/source/strikeout)s in 72 [innings pitched](/source/innings_pitched).  His batting statistics were also very poor.  He had only two [hits](/source/Hit_(baseball)) in 28 [at bat](/source/at_bat)s for a [batting average](/source/batting_average_(baseball)) of .071.<ref name=balm/>  That year, teammates [Pete LePine](/source/Pete_LePine), [Lew Post](/source/Lew_Post), [Lou Schiappacasse](/source/Lou_Schiappacasse), and [Ed Fisher](/source/Ed_Fisher_(baseball)) also played their whole professional careers within the last few weeks of the Tigers' 1902 season.<ref>{{cite web | last = Baseball Almanac | url= http://www.baseball-almanac.com/yearly/final.php?y=1902&l=AL| date=2000–2007| title=1902 American League Retirements| accessdate= August 19, 2009}}</ref>  [Jack Cronin](/source/Jack_Cronin) was the only of the 12 pitchers on the Tigers roster that year to finish with a higher earned run average than McCarthy, although Cronin had a win-loss record of 0–0 as a [relief pitcher](/source/relief_pitcher).  The Tigers struggled immensely in their second season in the [American League](/source/American_League) and were constantly changing their roster, which was largely filled with young and inexperienced rookies.
