**Arak County** ([Persian](/source/Persian_language): شهرستان اراک) is in [Markazi](/source/Markazi_province) province, Iran. Its capital is the city of [Arak](/source/Arak%2C_Iran).[3][a]

## History

After the 2006 National Census, [Khondab District](/source/Khondab_District) was separated from the county in the establishment of [Khondab County](/source/Khondab_County).[5] [Masumiyeh](/source/Masumiyeh_Rural_District) and [Moshkabad](/source/Moshkabad_Rural_District) Rural Districts were separated from the [Central District](/source/Central_District_(Arak_County)) in the formation of [Masumiyeh District](/source/Masumiyeh_District), and the village of [Karchan](/source/Karchan%2C_Markazi) was elevated to the status of a city. [Saruq Rural District](/source/Saruq_Rural_District_(Arak_County)) was also separated from the Central District to form [Saruq District](/source/Saruq_District), including the new [Mashhad ol Kubeh Rural District](/source/Mashhad_ol_Kubeh_Rural_District). [Hajjiabad Rural District](/source/Hajjiabad_Rural_District) was created in the Central District,[6] and the village of [Saruq](/source/Saruq%2C_Markazi) became a city.[7]

After the 2011 census, the cities of [Karahrud](/source/Karahrud) and [Senjan](/source/Senjan) were merged with the city of [Arak](/source/Arak%2C_Iran).[8]

## Demographics

### Population

At the time of the 2006 census, the county's population was 602,971 in 165,955 households.[9] The following census in 2011 counted 599,634 people in 182,749 households.[10] The 2016 census measured the population of the county as 591,756 in 188,180 households.[2]
