Arabo was born in the village of [Kurter](/source/A%C5%9Fa%C4%9F%C4%B1balc%C4%B1lar%2C_Bitlis) in the region of [Sasun](/source/Sasun_(historical_region)) in the [Bitlis vilayet](/source/Bitlis_vilayet).<ref name=":0" /> Arabo studied at the [Arakelots Monastery](/source/Arakelots_Monastery) school in [Mush](/source/Mu%C5%9F).<ref name=":0" /> Beginning in the late-1880s, he led the Armenian fedayi groups in Sasun and [Taron](/source/Taron_(historic_Armenia)).<ref name=":0" /> Initially, Arabo had formed a group modeled on those of the Kurdish bandits, to rob their enemies in turn and becoming a folk hero among Armenians. Starting in 1889, Arabo visited the [Caucasus](/source/Caucasus) several times. In 1892, he was arrested by Turkish authorities and sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment, but escaped from prison and resumed his fedayi activities.<ref name=":0" /> He took part in the first [ARF](/source/Armenian_Revolutionary_Federation) conference in [Tiflis](/source/Tbilisi) in 1892.<ref name=":0" /> In spring of 1893, while returning to Ottoman Armenia from the Caucasus to help rebels from Sasun, he was killed in 1895 along with four of his comrades during a battle with Kurdish bands on the road from [Khnus](/source/H%C4%B1n%C4%B1s) to Mush.<ref>[http://www.genocide.ru/enc/arabo.htm Genocide.ru (Russian)]</ref>
