In October/November 958, the [Byzantine Empire](/source/Byzantine_Empire) led by [John Tzimiskes](/source/John_Tzimiskes) and [Basil Lekapenos](/source/Basil_Lekapenos) managed to defeat [Sayf al-Dawla](/source/Sayf_al-Dawla) of the [Hamdanids](/source/Hamdanids) at the [Battle of Raban](/source/Battle_of_Raban). Raban was ruled by the Armenian ruler [Kogh Vasil](/source/Kogh_Vasil), following the [First Crusade](/source/First_Crusade) in 1097.
