***Aptrootia*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [fungi](/source/Fungi) in the family [Trypetheliaceae](/source/Trypetheliaceae).[1] It has four species. The genus was [circumscribed](/source/Circumscription_(taxonomy)) by [Robert Lücking](/source/Robert_L%C3%BCcking) and [Harrie Sipman](/source/Harrie_Sipman) in 2007, with *Aptrootia terricola* assigned as the [type species](/source/Type_species). This species, originally described by Dutch mycologist [André Aptroot](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Aptroot) as a species of *[Thelenella](/source/Thelenella)*,[2] is known from [Papua New Guinea](/source/Papua_New_Guinea) and [Costa Rica](/source/Costa_Rica).[3] Later [molecular](/source/Molecular_phylogenetic) work showed that the species did not belong in *Thelenella* (Aptroot himself had expressed doubt about this generic placement), but rather, in the Trypetheliaceae, with a [sister taxon](/source/Sister_taxon) relationship to a branch including *[Bathelium](/source/Bathelium)* and a [lineage](/source/Lineage_(evolution)) containing *[Trypethelium floridanum](/source/Trypethelium_floridanum)*. The new genus name honours Aptroot, "in recognition of his numerous contributions to tropical lichenology".[3]

Species in genus *Aptrootia* have completely immersed [perithecia](/source/Perithecia) with a brown-black [ostiolar](/source/Ostiole) region. This is surrounded by a white, cartilaginous [thallus](/source/Thallus) reminiscent of those in family [Gomphillaceae](/source/Gomphillaceae).[3]
