**Applegate** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area) in [Jackson County](/source/Jackson_County,_Oregon), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), United States.[1] It is west of [Medford](/source/Medford,_Oregon) on [Oregon Route 238](/source/Oregon_Route_238) and the [Applegate River](/source/Applegate_River). The community was probably named for [Lindsay Applegate](/source/Lindsay_Applegate), who, along with his brothers [Jesse](/source/Jesse_Applegate) and [Charles](/source/Charles_Applegate), explored the Applegate Valley while blazing the [Applegate Trail](/source/Applegate_Trail).[2]

In 2001, the [Applegate Valley AVA](/source/Applegate_Valley_AVA) became the sixth official wine [appellation](/source/American_Viticultural_Area) in Oregon.[3]

## Climate

This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C). According to the [Köppen Climate Classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_Climate_Classification) system, Applegate has a [warm-summer Mediterranean climate](/source/Mediterranean_climate#Warm-summer_Mediterranean_climate), abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[4]
