# Apple Pope

**Apple Joe Pope**[1] is an American [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) player who currently plays for the [United States national team](/source/United_States_national_rugby_league_team). He has also played for the [Jacksonville Axemen](/source/Jacksonville_Axemen). His position is hooker.

## Career

Pope was born in [Yulee, Florida](/source/Yulee,_Florida), near [Jacksonville](/source/Jacksonville).[2] He is a [registered nurse](/source/Registered_nurse) by profession.[2] He began his [rugby league](/source/Rugby_league) career in the [Jacksonville Axemen](/source/Jacksonville_Axemen)'s inaugural season in 2006. His brother Taco Pope has also played for the Axemen and the [United States rugby league team](/source/United_States_national_rugby_league_team).[3]

Pope made his debut on the national team at the [Rugby League Atlantic Cup](/source/Rugby_League_Atlantic_Cup) in [2009](/source/2009_Atlantic_Cup). He was named [team captain](/source/Team_captain) for the [2010 Atlantic Cup](/source/2010_Atlantic_Cup), leading the team to victory, and was named player of the game.[4][5]

In 2010 he went to Australia to attend training camps, and was named to the trial team of the [Tweed Heads Seagulls](/source/Tweed_Heads_Seagulls).[6][7]

On November 3, 2011, The annual [RLIF Awards](/source/RLIF_Awards) dinner was held at the [Tower of London](/source/Tower_of_London) and Pope was named the [United States](/source/United_States_national_rugby_league_team) player of the year.[8]
