'''Antoine Chazal''' (8 November 1793 – 12 August 1854) was a French painter of flowers and of portraits, as well as an [engraver](/source/engraving).<ref>{{Bryan (3rd edition)|title=Chazal, Antoine |volume=1}}</ref> He was born in Paris. He studied under [Misbach](/source/%3Afr%3AS%C3%A9bastien-Joseph_Misbach), [Bidauld](/source/Jean-Joseph-Xavier_Bidauld), and [Van Spaendonck](/source/Gerard_van_Spaendonck), and became Professor of Iconography at the [Jardin des Plantes](/source/Jardin_des_Plantes). Besides portraits, flowers, and fruit, he painted a few landscapes and altar-pieces for churches. He also engraved a portrait of Cardinal [La Fare](/source/Anne_Louis_Henri_de_La_Fare). He was the brother-in-law of writer and activist [Flora Tristan](/source/Flora_Tristan), and through her, the great-uncle of painter [Paul Gauguin](/source/Paul_Gauguin).
