**Anthony Veiller** (23 June 1903 – 27 June 1965) was an American [screenwriter](/source/Screenwriter) and [film producer](/source/Film_producer), who wrote for 41 films between [1934](/source/1934_in_film) and [1964](/source/1964_in_film). He was twice nominated for the [Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Adapted_Screenplay), for *[Stage Door](/source/Stage_Door)* (1937) and [*The Killers*](/source/The_Killers_(1946_film)) (1946).

## Early life and education

Veiller was born on 23 June 1903 in [New York City](/source/New_York_City) to playwright and screenwriter [Bayard Veiller](/source/Bayard_Veiller) and English-born actress [Margaret Wycherly](/source/Margaret_Wycherly). He studied at [Antioch College](/source/Antioch_College)[1] and [Union College](/source/Union_College), before moving to Hollywood in 1930.[2]

## Career

Veiller was twice nominated for an [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Award) for Best Screenplay. In 1937, he co-wrote (with [Morrie Ryskind](/source/Morrie_Ryskind)) the screenplay for *[Stage Door](/source/Stage_Door)*, starring [Katharine Hepburn](/source/Katharine_Hepburn), [Ginger Rogers](/source/Ginger_Rogers) and [Adolphe Menjou](/source/Adolphe_Menjou). This loose adaptation of the play by [George S. Kaufman](/source/George_S._Kaufman) and [Edna Ferber](/source/Edna_Ferber) was also nominated for the [Academy Award for Best Picture](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture).

Veiller was also Oscar-nominated for writing (with uncredited help from [John Huston](/source/John_Huston) and [Richard Brooks](/source/Richard_Brooks)) *[The Killers](/source/The_Killers_(1946_film))* (1946), an adaptation of the short story by [Ernest Hemingway](/source/Ernest_Hemingway). The film introduced [Burt Lancaster](/source/Burt_Lancaster) to filmgoers, and won an [Edgar Award](/source/Edgar_Award) as best mystery film of 1946. In 2008, it was included in the United States [National Film Registry](/source/National_Film_Registry) by the [Library of Congress](/source/Library_of_Congress).

During the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) he worked with [Frank Capra](/source/Frank_Capra) on several films in the documentary/propaganda film series collectively titled *[Why We Fight](/source/Why_We_Fight)*. In 1946 (the same year as *The Killers*), Veiller co-wrote [*The Stranger*](/source/The_Stranger_(1946_film)), directed by and starring [Orson Welles](/source/Orson_Welles). For *[State of the Union](/source/State_of_the_Union_(film))* (1948), again directed by Capra, Veiller was credited as co-producer as well as co-writer. Veiller worked with director [John Huston](/source/John_Huston) on several films: *[Moulin Rouge](/source/Moulin_Rouge_(1952_film))* (1952), *[Beat the Devil](/source/Beat_the_Devil_(film))* (1953), *[The List of Adrian Messenger](/source/The_List_of_Adrian_Messenger)* (1963), and *[The Night of the Iguana](/source/The_Night_of_the_Iguana_(film))* (1964), the film of the [Tennessee Williams](/source/Tennessee_Williams) play that became Veiller's final screen credit.

## Death

Veiller died on 27 June 1965 of [cancer](/source/Cancer) in [Hollywood](/source/Hollywood%2C_Los_Angeles), California.[2]
