==Biography==
Born to William McElrea and Kathleen (Owen) Snodgrass, he gained his M.A. and [D.Phil](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in 1963. He is [Emeritus Professor](/source/Emeritus_Professor) in Classical Archaeology at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) and a specialist in [Archaic Greece](/source/Archaic_Greece). He is a Fellow of [Clare College, Cambridge](/source/Clare_College%2C_Cambridge), and of the [McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research](/source/McDonald_Institute_for_Archaeological_Research). He chairs the [British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles](/source/British_Committee_for_the_Reunification_of_the_Parthenon_Marbles).

He taught at [Edinburgh University](/source/Edinburgh_University) from 1961 to 1976 making the move down to [Cambridge University](/source/Cambridge_University) in the same year. While there he was appointed the sixth [Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology](/source/Laurence_Professor_of_Classical_Archaeology) from 1976 to 2001. He was elected a Fellow of the [British Academy](/source/British_Academy) in 1979 and was vice-president from 1990 to 1992. He currently resides in Cambridge.
