He was nominated for an [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards) in the category [Best Art Direction](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Production_Design) for the film *[2001: A Space Odyssey](/source/2001%3A_A_Space_Odyssey_(film))*.[2]

He was married to actress [Heather Sears](/source/Heather_Sears) from 1957 until his death.
