Irish Roman Catholic Friar Minor and bishop

**Anthony MacGeoghegan**, [OFM](/source/Order_of_Friars_Minor) (died 1664) was a 17th-century Irish [Roman Catholic](/source/Roman_Catholic) [Friar Minor](/source/Order_of_Friars_Minor) and bishop.[1]

After he entered the Order, MacGeoghegan was educated at the [College of the Immaculate Conception](/source/College_of_the_Immaculate_Conception%2C_Prague) operated in [Prague](/source/Prague) by the friars for their Irish members due to the restrictions on the Catholic faith in their homeland during that period.

MacGeoghegan was appointed as [Bishop of Clonmacnoise](/source/Bishop_of_Clonmacnoise) by [Pope Innocent X](/source/Pope_Innocent_X) in 1647, for which he was [consecrated](/source/Consecration#Christianity) by [Giovanni Battista Rinuccini](/source/Giovanni_Battista_Rinuccini), the [Archbishop of Fermo](/source/Archbishop_of_Fermo) and papal [nuncio](/source/Nuncio) to Ireland, on 2 April 1648.[2] He served in that office until 1657, when he was [translated](/source/Translation_(ecclesiastical)) to the office of [Bishop of Meath](/source/Bishop_of_Meath), where he remained until 1661.[3]
