**Anthony Daniel Charles** (born 11 March 1981) is an English [footballer](/source/Association_football) who most recently played as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)) for [Rugby Town](/source/Rugby_Town_F.C.).

Born in [Isleworth](/source/Isleworth), he has played in the [Football League](/source/Football_League) for [Barnet](/source/Barnet_F.C.), [Aldershot Town](/source/Aldershot_Town_F.C.), [Northampton Town](/source/Northampton_Town_F.C.) and [Plymouth Argyle](/source/Plymouth_Argyle_F.C.). He has won four promotions with three clubs.

## Career

A [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)), Charles began his career with [Brook House](/source/A.F.C._Hayes) before being signed by [Crewe Alexandra](/source/Crewe_Alexandra_F.C.). However, he never made a first team appearance for the club. He returned to the south of England in 2001, and played for several non-league clubs, winning the [Isthmian League Premier Division](/source/Isthmian_League_Premier_Division) with [Aldershot Town](/source/Aldershot_Town_F.C.) in the [2002–03](/source/2002%E2%80%9303_in_English_football) season.

Charles then joined [Farnborough Town](/source/Farnborough_F.C.),[3] before joining [Barnet](/source/Barnet_F.C.) during their [Conference](/source/Football_Conference) promotion season of [2004–05](/source/2004%E2%80%9305_in_English_football).[4]

Charles was loaned to Aldershot Town for the end of the [2006–07](/source/2006%E2%80%9307_in_English_football) season,[5] his second spell with the club and made the deal permanent after being released by Barnet.[6] He was a championship winning defender in the 2007–08 season,[7] and in recognition of this feat he was named in the [Conference Premier](/source/Conference_Premier) team of the year along with Aldershot's [Nikki Bull](/source/Nikki_Bull), [Ben Harding](/source/Ben_Harding), [Lewis Chalmers](/source/Lewis_Chalmers) and [John Grant](/source/John_Grant_(footballer,_born_1981)).[8] At the end of the 2007–08 season, Charles signed a new two-year contract.[9] Charles was a regular starter for Aldershot Town, in their first season back in [the Football League](/source/The_Football_League) and he was rewarded with a double award by winning the Supporters Club Player of the Season Award and Players Player Award.[10] In June 2010, Charles signed a new one-year contract with Aldershot Town.[11]

Charles sustained a knee injury during Aldershot's last game of the [2010–11](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_in_English_football) campaign at [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.). The injury would keep him out for at least six months and with his contract expiring in July 2011, he was not offered a new deal.[12] Charles joined [Northampton Town](/source/Northampton_Town_F.C.) in March 2012 on an initial contract to the end of the season.[13][14] He signed a new one-year contract in May.[15] Having made 20 appearances in all competitions, Charles left the club in January 2013 after having his contract terminated,[16] and joined [Plymouth Argyle](/source/Plymouth_Argyle_F.C.) for the remainder of the 2012–13 season.[17][18] He made 11 appearances for the club before being released at the end of the campaign.[19][20]

Charles joined [Conference Premier](/source/Conference_Premier) side [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.) on a one-year contract on 19 June 2013.[21] He suffered with injuries throughout the [2013–14](/source/2013%E2%80%9314_Luton_Town_F.C._season) season, but made eight appearances as Luton won promotion to [League Two](/source/EFL_League_Two). On 9 May 2014, it was announced that Charles would not be offered a new contract and would leave Luton the next month. On 3 October 2014 he joined Nuneaton Town.[22] After playing in 11 fixtures at Nuneaton, in which they won 4, drew 6 and lost 1, he moved to [Worcester City](/source/Worcester_City_F.C.) in March 2015, until the end of the season.[23] He moved to sign for [Halesowen Town](/source/Halesowen_Town_F.C.) in the [Northern Premier League](/source/Northern_Premier_League) ahead of the following season.[24] After featuring heavily for The Yeltz, he was released in October 2015,[25] subsequently joining [Stratford Town](/source/Stratford_Town_F.C.).[26][27] He was released at the end of the season, joining Halesowen Town.[28] However, during the 2016–17 close-season he joined [Walton & Hersham](/source/Walton_%26_Hersham_F.C.) in the [Combined Counties Football League](/source/Combined_Counties_Football_League),[29] making his debut on 6 August 2016 in the [FA Cup](/source/FA_Cup) Extra Preliminary Round against [Westfield](/source/Westfield_F.C._(Surrey)). He joined [Rugby Town](/source/Rugby_Town_F.C.) from The Swans in October 2016, and made his debut away at [Stocksbridge Park Steels](/source/Stocksbridge_Park_Steels_F.C.).[30] He left Rugby Town in May 2017.[30]
