The **ante-chapel** is that portion of a [chapel](/source/Chapel) which lies on the western side of the [choir screen](/source/Choir_screen).[1]

In some of the colleges at [Oxford](/source/University_of_Oxford) and [Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) the ante-chapel is carried north and south across the west end of the chapel, constituting a western [transept](/source/Transept) or [narthex](/source/Narthex). This model, based on [Merton College](/source/Merton_College) chapel (13th century), of which only chancel and transept were built though a [nave](/source/Nave) was projected, was followed at [Wadham](/source/Wadham_College,_Oxford), [New](/source/New_College,_Oxford) and [Magdalen](/source/Magdalen_College,_Oxford) Colleges, Oxford, in the new chapel of [St John's College, Cambridge](/source/St_John's_College,_Cambridge), and in [Eton College](/source/Eton_College). In [Jesus College, Cambridge](/source/Jesus_College,_Cambridge), the transept and a short nave constitute the ante-chapel; in [Clare College](/source/Clare_College) an octagonal vestibule serves the same purpose; in [Christ's](/source/Christ's_College,_Cambridge), [Trinity](/source/Trinity_College,_Cambridge) and [King's](/source/King's_College,_Cambridge) Colleges, Cambridge, the ante-chapel is a portion of the main chapel, divided off from the [chancel](/source/Chancel) by the choir screen.[1]
