# Answering Bell

"**Answering Bell**" is a song by [alt-country](/source/Alternative_country) singer-songwriter [Ryan Adams](/source/Ryan_Adams) from his 2001 album *[Gold](/source/Gold_(Ryan_Adams_album))*. It was released as a [CD single](/source/CD_single) in 2002.[1]

The song features [Counting Crows](/source/Counting_Crows) frontman [Adam Duritz](/source/Adam_Duritz) on backing vocals.[2] When Ryan Adams performed the song on *[The Tonight Show with Jay Leno](/source/The_Tonight_Show_with_Jay_Leno)* in February 2002, Duritz sang with the band.[3]

## Music video

A [music video](/source/Music_video) for the song, directed by Luke Scott, was shot in January 2002. Loosely based on *[The Wizard of Oz](/source/The_Wizard_of_Oz_(1939_film))*, the video features cameos by [Elton John](/source/Elton_John), [Adam Duritz](/source/Adam_Duritz), and singer-songwriter [Leona Naess](/source/Leona_Naess),[4] who was briefly engaged to Adams.[5]

Adams reportedly got the idea for the video while sick in bed in a [Hamburg, Germany](/source/Hamburg,_Germany) hotel room, delirious from the flu medication he was taking. The singer-songwriter also claims that he asked [Bryan Adams](/source/Bryan_Adams), who was staying in the same hotel at the time, to appear in the video, but Bryan turned him down.[6]
