The '''Anscarids''' ({{langx|la|Anscarii}}) or the '''House of Ivrea''' were a medieval dynasty of [Burgundian](/source/Burgundians) and [Frankish](/source/Franks) origin which rose to prominence in [Northern Italy](/source/Northern_Italy) in the tenth century, briefly holding the [Italian throne](/source/Kingdom_of_Italy_(Holy_Roman_Empire)). The main branch ruled the [County of Burgundy](/source/County_of_Burgundy) from the eleventh to fourteenth centuries and it was one of their members who first declared himself a [count palatine](/source/count_palatine). The [cadet](/source/cadet_branch) [Castilian branch of Ivrea](/source/Castilian_House_of_Burgundy) ruled the [Kingdom of Galicia](/source/Kingdom_of_Galicia) from 1111 and the [Kingdoms of Castile](/source/kingdom_of_Castile) and [León](/source/kingdom_of_Le%C3%B3n) from 1126 until 1369. The Spanish [House of Trastámara](/source/House_of_Trast%C3%A1mara), which ruled in Castile, Aragon, Naples, and Navarre at various points between the late 14th and early 16th centuries, was an illegitimate cadet branch of that family.

==Ivrea==
The founder of the family's fortunes was a petty Burgundian count named [Anscar](/source/Anscar_I_of_Ivrea), who, with the support of the powerful [archbishop of Rheims](/source/archbishop_of_Rheims), [Fulk the Venerable](/source/Fulk_the_Venerable), brought [Guy III of Spoleto](/source/Guy_III_of_Spoleto) to [Langres](/source/Langres) to be crowned [King of France](/source/King_of_France) in 887. Their plot failing, Anscar and his brother accompanied Guy back to Italy with 500 Burgundian troops to seek the throne of [Berengar I](/source/Berengar_I_of_Italy).<ref>De Manteyer, 495</ref> In gratefulness to Anscar, Guy created the [March of Ivrea](/source/March_of_Ivrea) to bestow on his Burgundian faithful. Anscar's descendants held the march until 1030. Perhaps the most illustrious scion of the house was his grandson [Berengar](/source/Berengar_II_of_Italy), the first of three Anscarids to be crowned king of Italy.{{cn|date=October 2022}}

Berengar seized the throne in 950 after the death of [Lothair II](/source/Lothair_II_of_Italy). He was opposed, immediately, by Lothair's widow [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide_of_Italy), whom he imprisoned after his attempt to force her marriage to his son, [Adalbert II](/source/Adalbert_of_Italy), failed. [Emperor Otto I](/source/Emperor_Otto_I) came down the peninsula and forced him to do homage in 952. For the next eleven years, Berengar and his co-crowned son governed Italy until Otto finally formally deposed them in 963.{{cn|date=October 2022}}

From 1002 to 1014 [Arduin of Italy](/source/Arduin_of_Italy) held the Italian throne in opposition to the German [Henry II](/source/Henry_II%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor).{{cn|date=October 2022}}

==Counts of Burgundy==
Adalbert was eventually forced to flee to Burgundy, where he died at [Autun](/source/Autun). His widow remarried to [Otto-Henry, Duke of Burgundy](/source/Otto-Henry%2C_Duke_of_Burgundy) and her son by Adalbert, [Otto William](/source/Otto-William%2C_Count_of_Burgundy), was adopted by the duke. In 982, the [County of Burgundy](/source/County_of_Burgundy) (which will later be known as [Free County](/source/Franche-Comt%C3%A9)) is created. Otto-Henri supported Otto-William to be the first [count of Burgundy](/source/count_of_Burgundy). At the death of the duke, the count inherited the [duchy of Burgundy](/source/duchy_of_Burgundy). After the [council of Héry](/source/council_of_H%C3%A9ry) ([1015](/source/1015)), [Robert II of France](/source/Robert_II_of_France) and his son, [Henry I of France](/source/Henry_I_of_France), confiscated the duchy, leaving only a small portion around [Dijon](/source/Dijon) to Otto-William.{{cn|date=October 2022}}

The greatest of the free counts was [Renaud III](/source/Reginald_III%2C_Count_of_Burgundy), who, from 1127, used the title ''franc-comte'' as a sign of independence of [German](/source/Kingdom_of_Germany) or [Imperial](/source/Holy_Roman_Empire) authority, but was forced to submit to [Conrad III](/source/Conrad_III_of_Germany). His daughter and heiress, [Beatrice](/source/Beatrice_I%2C_Countess_of_Burgundy), married [Frederick Barbarossa](/source/Frederick_Barbarossa) and united the Anscarid inheritance with that of the [Hohenstaufen](/source/Hohenstaufen). Burgundy was inherited by her son [Otto I](/source/Otto_I%2C_Count_of_Burgundy), who had an Anscarid name. Thus the county was lost for the House of Ivrea, but it came back when [Hugh of Chalon](/source/Hugh%2C_Count_of_Burgundy) married to [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide%2C_Countess_of_Burgundy) countess of Burgundy, daughter of [Beatrice II of Hohenstaufen](/source/Beatrice_II%2C_Countess_of_Burgundy) (Otto I's daughter). However, in 1303 died [Otto IV, Count of Burgundy](/source/Otto_IV%2C_Count_of_Burgundy), last male of the main line and the county inherited to the Dampierre family and finally to the Capetian-Valois dukes of Burgundy.{{cn|date=October 2022}}

[John I of Chalon-Arlay](/source/John_I_of_Chalon-Arlay), a younger brother of Hugh of Chalon, became the founder of the line of Chalon-Arlay. His descendant, [John III of Chalon-Arlay](/source/John_III_of_Chalon-Arlay) married [Mary de Beaux](/source/Mary_of_Baux-Orange) princess of Orange, thus the principality was acquired by the family. The last male offspring was [Philibert of Chalon](/source/Philibert_of_Chalon) who died in 1530. The possessions inherited to son of his sister [Claudia of Chalon](/source/Claudia_of_Chalon), i.e. [René of Nassau](/source/Ren%C3%A9_of_Chalon).{{cn|date=October 2022}}

==[Castilian branch of Ivrea](/source/Castilian_House_of_Burgundy)==
[Raymond](/source/Raymond_of_Burgundy), fourth son of [Count William I of Burgundy](/source/William_I%2C_Count_of_Burgundy), travelled to [Castile-León](/source/Castile-Le%C3%B3n) in the late eleventh century and there married [Urraca](/source/Urraca_of_Le%C3%B3n_and_Castile), the future monarch. She was succeeded by their son, [Alfonso VII](/source/Alfonso_VII_of_Le%C3%B3n_and_Castile). Subsequent [monarchs of Castile](/source/kings_of_Castile) and [León](/source/King_of_Le%C3%B3n) were their agnatic descendants until the 16th century, although the crown had passed to an illegitimate cadet branch, the [House of Trastámara](/source/House_of_Trast%C3%A1mara), in the late 14th century.{{cn|date=October 2022}}
