Born in [Moose Jaw](/source/Moose_Jaw), [Saskatchewan](/source/Saskatchewan), she was one of the 68 players born in Canada to join the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in its twelve years history.

Surkowski joined her younger sister [Lee](/source/Lee_Surkowski) on the [South Bend Blue Sox](/source/South_Bend_Blue_Sox) team for the [1945 season](/source/1945_All-American_Girls_Professional_Baseball_League_season).
