**Anne Jackson** (September 3, 1925 – April 12, 2016)[1][2][3][4] was an American actress of stage, screen, and television. She was the wife of actor [Eli Wallach](/source/Eli_Wallach), with whom she often co-starred. In 1956, she was nominated for the [Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play](/source/Tony_Award_for_Best_Featured_Actress_in_a_Play) for her performance in [Paddy Chayefsky](/source/Paddy_Chayefsky)'s *[Middle of the Night](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Middle_of_the_Night_(play)&action=edit&redlink=1)*.[5] In 1963, she won an [Obie Award](/source/Obie_Award) for [Best Actress](/source/Obie_Award_for_Distinguished_Performance_by_an_Actress) for her performance in two [Off-Broadway](/source/Off-Broadway) plays, *The Typists* and *The Tiger*.[6]

## Early life

Jackson was born in [Millvale, Pennsylvania](/source/Millvale%2C_Pennsylvania) in 1925,[1] the daughter of Stella Germaine (née Murray) and John Ivan Jackson, a barber.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] She was the youngest of three daughters, after Catherine, eight years older, and Beatrice, three years older.[7] Her year of birth had been misreported for years as 1926, the year Jackson gave in a 1962 interview.[7] Jackson's mother was of [Irish Catholic](/source/Irish_Catholic) descent and her father, whose original name was [Ivan Jakšeković](https://search.ancestrylibrary.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=2717&h=315904&tid=&pid=&queryId=f185f0eb7ced50ac1c825b4d7d556073&usePUB=true&_phsrc=iqb70&_phstart=successSource), had emigrated from [Croatia](/source/Croatia) (then part of [Austria-Hungary](/source/Austria-Hungary)) in 1918.[1][7][8] Her family moved to [Brooklyn, New York](/source/Brooklyn%2C_New_York) when she was eight years old. She attended [Franklin K. Lane High School](/source/Franklin_K._Lane_High_School).[8]

## Career

In New York, Jackson trained at the [Neighborhood Playhouse](/source/Neighborhood_Playhouse) and the [Actors Studio](/source/Actors_Studio). She made her [Broadway](/source/Broadway_theatre) debut in 1945. ## Personal life

Jackson was married to actor [Eli Wallach](/source/Eli_Wallach), with whom she acted frequently, from March 5, 1948, until his death on June 24, 2014. They had three children, Peter, Katherine, and Roberta.[1] Her marriage to Wallach was one of the longest and most successful in the industry. She later taught at the [HB Studio](/source/HB_Studio)[10] in [Manhattan](/source/Manhattan), and continued to act in cameo roles.[1]

## Death

Jackson died at her home in [Manhattan](/source/Manhattan) on April 12, 2016, aged 90.[1]
