# Anna Steiger

**Anna Justine Steiger** (born 13 February 1960[1][2]) is a British and American [opera](/source/Opera) singer who has sung leading [soprano](/source/Soprano) and [mezzo-soprano](/source/Mezzo-soprano) roles in British, European and North American opera houses. She has sung many recitals at festivals which have been broadcast live on the BBC, Radio France and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. In 2015, she was invited to participate in the Australian Chamber Music Festival.

## Early life

Steiger was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of actors [Claire Bloom](/source/Claire_Bloom) and [Rod Steiger](/source/Rod_Steiger).[3]

She trained with [Noelle Barker](/source/Noelle_Barker) at the [Guildhall School of Music](/source/Guildhall_School_of_Music) in London from 1977 to 1983 and then with [Vera Rózsa](/source/Vera_R%C3%B3zsa) at the [National Opera Studio](/source/National_Opera_Studio) from 1985 to 1986. She won the Sir [Peter Pears](/source/Peter_Pears) Award in 1982, the [Richard Tauber](/source/Richard_Tauber) Prize in 1984, and the [John Christie](/source/John_Christie_(opera_manager)) Award in 1985.[1]

## Career

Her professional debut was as Dorabella in *[Così fan tutte](/source/Cos%C3%AC_fan_tutte)* in 1984 with [Opera 80](/source/Opera_80). In 1986 she sang the title role in Monteverdi's *[L'incoronazione di Poppea](/source/L'incoronazione_di_Poppea)* at [Glyndebourne](/source/Glyndebourne_Festival_Opera), and she returned to sing in many productions there in roles such as Concepción in *[L'heure espagnole](/source/L'heure_espagnole)*. With Glyndebourne Touring Opera, she sang the role of Sashka in the 1987 world premiere of [Nigel Osborne](/source/Nigel_Osborne)'s *[The Electrification of the Soviet Union](/source/The_Electrification_of_the_Soviet_Union)*.[4]

From 1988, she sang at other opera houses in the UK, including the [Royal Opera House](/source/Royal_Opera_House), Covent Garden, with roles in *[Parsifal](/source/Parsifal)*,[5] *[Jenůfa](/source/Jen%C5%AFfa)* and *[The Knot Garden](/source/The_Knot_Garden)*, and the [English National Opera](/source/English_National_Opera) in *[The Makropulos Affair](/source/The_Makropulos_Affair_(opera))*. Abroad, her roles have included Despina in *Così fan tutte* (Amsterdam, Stuttgart and Zurich), Zerlina in *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)* ([Seattle Opera](/source/Seattle_Opera), Stuttgart and [Nancy](/source/Nancy,_France)), Governess in *[The Turn of the Screw](/source/The_Turn_of_the_Screw_(opera))* ([La Fenice](/source/La_Fenice)), Jenny in *[Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny](/source/Rise_and_Fall_of_the_City_of_Mahagonny)* ([Los Angeles Opera](/source/Los_Angeles_Opera)),[6] the Composer in *[Ariadne auf Naxos](/source/Ariadne_auf_Naxos)* ([Opera Theatre of St. Louis](/source/Opera_Theatre_of_St._Louis)),[7] Concepción in L’Heure Espagnole ([New York City Opera](/source/New_York_City_Opera) and Geneva),[8] Serpetta in *[La finta giardiniera](/source/La_finta_giardiniera)* (Frankfurt and Lausanne), and Damigella in *L'incoronazione di Poppea* at the [Salzburg Festival](/source/Salzburg_Festival). She has sung many times with [Nicolaus Harnoncourt](/source/Nicolaus_Harnoncourt) and in 1991 recorded with him the role of Despina with the [Concertgebouw Orchestra](/source/Concertgebouw_Orchestra) for the Teldec/Warner Classics label.[9] She appeared at the 2024 [Grange Park Opera](/source/Grange_Park_Opera) festival as the Marquise of Berkenfield, "a model of haughty *noblesse oblige*, stern in voice and nature", in *[The Daughter of the Regiment](/source/The_Daughter_of_the_Regiment)*.[10]
