# Anna Kasyan

**Anna Kasyan** (Armenian: Աննա Կասյան; born 7 October 1981)[1] is a [Georgian](/source/Georgia_(country))-born [Armenian](/source/Armenians) opera singer ([soprano](/source/Soprano)) based in France.

## Early life and education

Kasyan began her early musical training by studying piano and violin at the Central Music School for gifted children in [Tbilisi](/source/Tbilisi), Georgia. From an early age, she participated in many performances as a soloist. At the age of nine, she made her debut with an orchestra. In 1999, Kasyan entered [Tbilisi State Conservatory](/source/Tbilisi_State_Conservatory) in violin class. By this time she became interested in singing and in 2001, she continued studying singing at the same [Conservatoryby](/source/Tbilisi_State_Conservatory) professor Svetlana Egorova.[2]

After completing her musical education, Kasyan continued her studies in France. Since 2003, she pursued singing classes at the [Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris](/source/%C3%89cole_Normale_de_Musique_de_Paris),[3] where she graduated in 2008 with the Diploma of Higher Concertiste with unanimous approval. Simultaneous to her studies, Kasyan also entered "cycle du perfectionnement" (specialization) at [Conservatoire de Paris](/source/Conservatoire_de_Paris) between 2004 and 2006. Kasyan participated in master classes led by [Tom Krause](/source/Tom_Krause), [Raina Kabaivanska](/source/Raina_Kabaivanska), [Viorica Cortez](/source/Viorica_Cortez), [Janine Reiss](/source/Janine_Reiss) and [baroque music](/source/Baroque_music) with [Nicolau de Figueiredo](/source/Nicolau_de_Figueiredo) and [Jory Vinikour](/source/Jory_Vinikour).

## Awards and nominations

Kasyan is a prize-winner of numerous international competitions, including the 1st [Renata Tebaldi](/source/Renata_Tebaldi) International Competition in San Marino (organized by the [Renata Tebaldi Foundation](/source/Renata_Tebaldi_Foundation) in 2005, Second Prize);[4] a First Prize in Singing Musical Autumn Festival, Adams, then a 1st Prize in Singing Competition in [Pretoria](/source/Pretoria). She was the winner of the Meyer Foundation award for the years 2004–2005.

Kasyan was selected by Adami (Society for Administration of Rights of Artists, Musicians and Performers) for Revelations Classics 2006.[5]

In May 2008, she participated in [International Queen Elisabeth Music Competition](/source/Queen_Elisabeth_Music_Competition) in Belgium. She gave an outstanding performance and the competition went well for Kasyan: 24 candidates were selected out of 72 eligible to compete. Kasyan participated in the semi-final on 13 May 2008. At the end of the semi-finals, she was one of the 12 finalists, and then became the winner of the 4th prize in this very prestigious competition held every four years.

On 12 June 2009, Anna Kasyan won the [Grand Prix](/source/Prize) at the 3rd International Singing Competition at the 71st [Strasbourg Music Festival](/source/Strasbourg_Music_Festival) under the chairmanship of [Barbara Hendricks](/source/Barbara_Hendricks).[6]

In 2010, Anna Kasyan was nominated for the [Victoires de la Musique](/source/Victoires_de_la_Musique) Classique award.

In 2012, Anna Kasyan was selected by [Ararat](/source/Ararat_(brandy)) as being among top 50 most influential Armenians today, among other notable names such as [Charles Aznavour](/source/Charles_Aznavour), [Serj Tankian](/source/Serj_Tankian), [Ruben Vardanian](/source/Ruben_Vardanian) and others.

## Performances

Being an active performer, Kasyan has sung in prestigious halls such as [Carnegie Hall](/source/Carnegie_Hall), [Opéra de Genève](/source/Grand_Th%C3%A9%C3%A2tre_de_Gen%C3%A8ve), [Saint Petersburg](/source/Saint_Petersburg), [Salle Cortot](/source/%C3%89cole_Normale_de_Musique_de_Paris) in Paris, UNESCO, [Cité de la Musique](/source/Cit%C3%A9_de_la_Musique), gives concerts in San Marino and in Italy.[4]

In December 2005, she made the notable performance of Mozart's *[Requiem](/source/Requiem_(Mozart))* at [St. Eustache Church in Paris](/source/%C3%89glise_Saint-Eustache,_Paris).

In 2006, she sang [Rachmaninoff](/source/Sergei_Rachmaninoff)-[Scarlatti](/source/Alessandro_Scarlatti)-[Haendel](/source/George_Frideric_Handel) in Paris. She also performed works of [Armenian](/source/Armenians) composer [Garbis Aprikian](/source/Garbis_Aprikian) before her [Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart) concert in [Toulouse](/source/Toulouse). Her talent was rewarded again in the same year 2006, when she received: the 3rd Prize in Opera category, Mozart Prize and the Best Opera Singer Prize at the [ARD International Music Competition](/source/ARD_International_Music_Competition) in [Munich](/source/Munich), and 1 Song Award at the International [Pamplona](/source/Pamplona).

In 2007, she performed in [Basel](/source/Basel), where she performed songs of [Schubert](/source/Franz_Schubert) and French opera arias. The artist also gave a series of Mozart concerts in [Warsaw](/source/Warsaw), Zurich, [Osnabrück](/source/Osnabr%C3%BCck), [Pamplona](/source/Pamplona) and [Toulouse](/source/Toulouse) and appeared in recital at the Festival of Sacred Music in [Nice](/source/Nice), and at the Opera de [Toulon](/source/Toulon) (Jano in *Jenufa*).

Her recently notable roles include Zerlina in [Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart)'s *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)*, Despina in [Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart)'s *[Così fan tutte](/source/Cos%C3%AC_fan_tutte)*, Rosina in [Rossini](/source/Gioachino_Rossini)'s *[The Barber of Seville](/source/The_Barber_of_Seville)* and Norina in [Donizetti](/source/Gaetano_Donizetti)'s *[Don Pasquale](/source/Don_Pasquale)*.

In September 2019, with the baritone [Adam Barro](/source/Mourad_Amirkhanian), she was the head of the concert organized in tribute to [Komitas](/source/Komitas) in the [Church of the Madeleine](/source/Church_of_the_Madeleine) in Paris.[7]
