'''Anna Amtmann''' is a German scientist. She is professor for Molecular Plant Physiology at the [University of Glasgow](/source/University_of_Glasgow). She served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal ''[Plant, Cell & Environment](/source/Plant%2C_Cell_%26_Environment)'' from 2018 to 2023.

== Early life and education ==
Amtmann studied languages, mathematics and biology at the [University of Paris](/source/University_of_Paris) and [Heidelberg University](/source/Heidelberg_University).<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|url=https://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/biology/staff/annaamtmann/#/biography|title=University of Glasgow - Research Institutes - Institute of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology - All staff - Dr Anna D Amtmann|website=www.gla.ac.uk|language=en|access-date=2019-12-24}}</ref> She was an [Erasmus Programme](/source/Erasmus_Programme) student at the [University of Barcelona](/source/University_of_Barcelona).<ref name=":1">{{Cite web|url=https://royalsociety.org/topics-policy/diversity-in-science/parent-carer-scientist/anna-amtmann/|title=Professor Anna Amtmann {{!}} Royal Society|website=royalsociety.org|language=en-gb|access-date=2019-12-24}}</ref> Amtmann completed her graduate degrees in [biology](/source/biology) in the laboratory of [Dietrich Gradmann](/source/%3Ade%3ADietrich_Gradmann) at the [University of Göttingen](/source/University_of_G%C3%B6ttingen).<ref name=":1" /> Her doctoral research involved the use of [electrophysiology](/source/electrophysiology) to study unicellular marine algae, in an effort to understand how they maintain [homeostasis](/source/homeostasis) for calcium and sodium ions.

== Research and career ==
In 1993, after earning her PhD, Amtmann investigated ion transport properties in barley in [Dale Sanders](/source/Dale_Sanders)' laboratory at the [University of York](/source/University_of_York). Whilst at York she developed microarrays that could be used to monitor how ion transporters responded to nutrient deficiency and salinity.<ref name=":0" />

Amtmann was appointed a lecturer at the [University of Glasgow](/source/University_of_Glasgow) in 2001 and was promoted to Professor in 2014. She spent 2007 on sabbatical at the [Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology](/source/Max_Planck_Institute_of_Molecular_Plant_Physiology) in Golm.<ref name=":1" /> Her research considers the mechanisms by which plants adapt to nutrient deficiency, drought and salinity. She has explored how solar-powered microorganisms could be used to extra salt from seawater.<ref name=":2">{{Cite web|url=https://the-gist.org/2011/11/using-biology-to-solve-the-problem-of-water-shortage/|title=Using Biology to Solve the Problem of Water Shortage • theGIST|last=Eisenach|first=Cornelia|date=2011-11-01|website=theGIST|language=en-GB|access-date=2019-12-24}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.wskep.net/index.php/waterruk/search?sortBy947=Company&sortOrder947=asc&pageSize947=25&page947=27|title=Water Portal :: People|website=www.wskep.net|access-date=2019-12-24}}</ref>
