'''Angiology''' (from [Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) {{lang|grc|[ἀγγεῖον](/source/wiktionary%3A%E1%BC%80%CE%BD%CE%B3%CE%B5%E1%BF%96%CE%BF%CE%BD)}}, ''angeīon'', "vessel"; and {{lang|grc|[-λογία](/source/wiktionary%3A-%CE%BB%CE%BF%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B1)}}, ''[-logia](/source/wiktionary%3A-logia)'') is the medical specialty dedicated to studying the [circulatory system](/source/circulatory_system) and of the [lymphatic system](/source/lymphatic_system), i.e., [arteries](/source/arteries), [veins](/source/veins) and [lymphatic vessel](/source/lymphatic_vessel)s.<ref>{{cite web |title=Angiology |url=https://www.merriam-webster.com/medical/angiology |website=www.merriam-webster.com |publisher=Merriam Webster Incorporated |access-date=9 January 2021}}</ref>

In the [UK](/source/United_Kingdom), this field is more often termed ''angiology'', and in the [United States](/source/United_States) the term '''vascular medicine''' is more frequent. The field of vascular medicine (angiology) is the field that deals with preventing, diagnosing, and treating [lymphatic](/source/lymphatic_vessel) and [blood vessel](/source/blood_vessel) related diseases.<ref>{{Citation |last=Young |first=Michael |title=Vascular Medical Quality and Patient Safety|date=2022 |url=https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK578196/ |work=StatPearls |access-date=2023-11-24 |place=Treasure Island (FL) |publisher=StatPearls Publishing |pmid=35201724 |last2=Smith |first2=Mark}}</ref>

==Overview==
Arterial diseases include the [aorta](/source/aorta) ([aneurysms](/source/aortic_aneurysm)/[dissection](/source/aortic_dissection)) and arteries supplying the legs, hands, kidneys, brain, intestines. It also covers arterial [thrombosis](/source/thrombosis) and [embolism](/source/embolism); [vasculitides](/source/vasculitides); and [vasospastic disorder](/source/vasospasm)s. Naturally, it deals with preventing [cardiovascular disease](/source/cardiovascular_disease)s such as [heart attack](/source/myocardial_infarction) and [stroke](/source/stroke). Venous diseases include venous thrombosis, chronic [venous insufficiency](/source/Chronic_venous_insufficiency), and [varicose vein](/source/varicose_vein)s. Lymphatic diseases include primary and secondary forms of [lymphedema](/source/lymphedema). It also involves modification of risk factors for vascular disease like high [cholesterol](/source/cholesterol), high [blood pressure](/source/blood_pressure).

Cardiovascular risk factors such [high blood pressure](/source/high_blood_pressure), elevated [cholesterol](/source/cholesterol) and others fall under the specialty of vascular medicine.

==Vascular medicine training==
Vascular medicine (angiology) training is well established in some European countries. The first European educational Working Group was born in 1991 in Milan (EWMA) becoming in 1998 a European Scientific Association [VAS Vascular Independent Research and Education European Organization](/source/VAS_Vascular_Independent_Research_and_Education_European_Organization) with several European educational programmes: European Fellowship, European Master, CESMA-UEMS European Diploma and Postgrad Courses. In the [United States](/source/United_States) there are several independent vascular medicine training programs and twelve NIH funded three-year programs as well. These programs are suitable for either [Internal medicine](/source/Internal_medicine) specialists as a [fellowship](/source/Fellowship_(medicine)) or for [cardiologists](/source/cardiologists). In 2005, the first vascular medicine boards were administered by the [American Board of Vascular Medicine](/source/American_Board_of_Vascular_Medicine). For current education and training in vascular medicine, see [Society for Vascular Medicine](/source/Society_for_Vascular_Medicine).
