Carbone had a much travelled career, playing for ten different clubs. He began his youth career with [Bari](/source/A.S._Bari), making his professional debut with the club in [Serie B](/source/Serie_B) during the [1988–89 season](/source/1988%E2%80%9389_Serie_B), earning promotion to [Serie A](/source/Serie_A). During his [first season in Serie A](/source/1989%E2%80%9390_Serie_A), he broke into the starting line-up, making 26 appearances and scoring a goal against [Inter](/source/Internazionale_Milano_F.C.) at the San Siro stadium. In 1990, he moved to [Milan](/source/A.C._Milan) at the request of manager [Arrigo Sacchi](/source/Arrigo_Sacchi). During his [first season](/source/1990%E2%80%9391_Serie_A) with the club, he made 21 appearances in Serie A, making his club debut on 9 September 1990, in a 1–0 home win over [Genoa](/source/Genoa_Football_and_Cricket_Club) in Serie A.
