**Angeline Boulley** (born 1966) is a Native American ([Ojibwe](/source/Ojibwe)) author and has worked to improve education for Indigenous children. Her debut work, *[Firekeeper's Daughter](/source/Firekeeper's_Daughter)*, was named one of the top 100 young adult novels of all time by *[Time](/source/Time_(magazine))* magazine.[1] It was also a [*New York Times* best seller](/source/The_New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list)[2] and won the [Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Novel](/source/Edgar_Allan_Poe_Award_for_Best_Young_Adult_Novel) in 2022.[3] The novel will be adapted into a miniseries by [Higher Ground](/source/Higher_Ground_Productions).[4]

## Personal life

Boulley is an enrolled member of the [Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians](/source/Sault_Tribe_of_Chippewa_Indians).[5] She was born and raised in "Bahweting (the place of the rapids) in [Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan](/source/Sault_Ste._Marie%2C_Michigan)."[6]

She is a graduate of [Central Michigan University](/source/Central_Michigan_University).[7]

Her "father is a traditional firekeeper, who strikes ceremonial fires at spiritual activities in the tribal community and ensures protocols are followed, while providing cultural teachings through stories told around the fire."[6]

## Career

Boulley has worked in "Indian education at the tribal, state, and national levels."[6] At the tribal level, she served as the Educational Director and Assistant Director.[6] She also served on the Board of Regents at [Bay Mills Community College](/source/Bay_Mills_Community_College) before becoming the Director for the [Office of Indian Education](/source/Bureau_of_Indian_Education) at the [U.S. Department of Education](/source/United_States_Department_of_Education).[6]

At present, Boulley works as a full-time author.[6]

## *Firekeeper's Daughter*

Boulley's debut novel, *Firekeeper's Daughter*, was published March 16, 2021, by [Henry Holt and Co.](/source/Henry_Holt_and_Company)[8] The book is a [*New York Times* best seller](/source/The_New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list).[2] *Time* magazine named it one of the best 100 young adult books of all time.[1] In 2022, it won the [Michael L. Printz Award](/source/Michael_L._Printz_Award) for young adult literature, the [Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Novel](/source/Edgar_Allan_Poe_Award_for_Best_Young_Adult_Novel), the [William C. Morris Award](/source/William_C._Morris_Award), and the [American Indian Youth Literature Award](/source/American_Indian_Youth_Literature_Awards) Best Young Adult Honor.[9] In the same year, it was named to the [Bank Street](/source/Bank_Street_College_of_Education) Children's Book Committee's Best Books of the Year List with an "Outstanding Merit" distinction and shared the Committee's 2022 [Josette Frank Award](/source/Josette_Frank_Award) with [Matt de la Peña](/source/Matt_de_la_Pe%C3%B1a) and [Christian Robinson's](/source/Christian_Robinson) *Milo Imagines the World*.[10][11] The German translation, which retains the English title and was published in 2022 by [cbj](/source/Cbj_(publisher)), was nominated in March 2023 for the [Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis](/source/Deutscher_Jugendliteraturpreis) in the category "YA novel".

The novel is being adapted for television at [Netflix](/source/Netflix) by [Higher Ground Productions](/source/Higher_Ground_Productions), former President [Barack Obama](/source/Barack_Obama) and [Michelle Obama's](/source/Michelle_Obama) production company.[8]

Boulley's second novel, [Warrior Girl Unearthed](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Warrior_Girl_Unearthed&action=edit&redlink=1), was published in 2023 and is set in the same community of Sugar Island ten years later than Firekeeper's Daughter.[12]

Boulley's third novel, [Sisters in the Wind](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sisters_in_the_Wind&action=edit&redlink=1) was published in 2025 and takes place in the same fictionalized world of her tribe and community as the first two novels.[13]
