The family moved back to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when she was a toddler. She lived in Rio and Brasilia and received her bachelor's degree in physics from [Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro](/source/Pontifical_Catholic_University_of_Rio_de_Janeiro) in 1981. From Fermilab, Olinto moved to the [University of Chicago](/source/University_of_Chicago) where she became the first tenured woman in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
