While the district of Angeghtun was likely ruled by a branch of the [Orontid dynasty](/source/Orontid_dynasty) that ruled the [Kingdom of Sophene](/source/Kingdom_of_Sophene), Armenian sources describe the fortress of Anggh as a royal fortress of the kings of Armenia where the royal treasures were kept.{{Sfn|Toumanoff|1963|p=167-168}} The Grand Chamberlain of Armenia ({{transliteration|xcl|hayr tʻagawori}} or {{transliteration|xcl|mardpet}}) was in charge of administering the fortress and the wealth within it.{{Sfn|Toumanoff|1963|p=167-168}} According to [Cyril Toumanoff](/source/Cyril_Toumanoff), Anggh was likely the central fortress of one of the four {{transliteration|xcl|[bdeashkh](/source/Bidaxsh)}}s of the Kingdom of Armenia, who were high-ranking nobles in charge of defending the kingdom's border regions.{{Sfn|Toumanoff|1963|p=167}}
