==Playing career==
Verner was born in [York, Ontario](/source/York%2C_Toronto). He played junior hockey in the [Ontario Hockey League](/source/Ontario_Hockey_League) for the [Peterborough Petes](/source/Peterborough_Petes). He was drafted 34th overall by the [Edmonton Oilers](/source/Edmonton_Oilers) in the [1991 NHL entry draft](/source/1991_NHL_entry_draft), but spent three seasons playing in the [American Hockey League](/source/American_Hockey_League) for the [Cape Breton Oilers](/source/Cape_Breton_Oilers) and never managed to play in the NHL.

Since 1995, Verner has played in European leagues, beginning with a spell in [Austria](/source/Austria) for [EHC Lustenau](/source/EHC_Lustenau), followed by a season in [Finland](/source/Finland)'s [SM-liiga](/source/SM-liiga) with [HPK](/source/HPK) where he served as the team's starting goalie. He then spent two seasons in [Sweden](/source/Sweden) playing in the [Elitserien](/source/Swedish_Hockey_League) with [Malmö IF](/source/Malm%C3%B6_Redhawks). He moved to the [Deutsche Eishockey Liga](/source/Deutsche_Eishockey_Liga) in [Germany](/source/Germany), spending two seasons with the [Kölner Haie](/source/K%C3%B6lner_Haie) and two seasons with the [Hannover Scorpions](/source/Hannover_Scorpions). He returned to Austria to play for [EC KAC](/source/EC_KAC) in 2003 and stayed with the team until 2008, when he joined the [Newcastle Vipers](/source/Newcastle_Vipers) in the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom).

He spent the 08/09 season playing for the Newcastle Vipers in the [UK's Elite Ice Hockey League](/source/Elite_Ice_Hockey_League). At the end of that season, he was made a free agent before signing for [Sheffield Steelers](/source/Sheffield_Steelers) in October '09 as a replacement for injured goalie [Kevin Reiter](/source/Kevin_Reiter). On May 2, 2012, the [Peterborough Petes](/source/Peterborough_Petes) hired Verner as their new full-time goaltending coach, taking over for [Ron Tugnutt](/source/Ron_Tugnutt), who stepped aside as the team's goaltending consultant after two seasons.
