Proud was born on 27 March 1954. He graduated from [King's College London](/source/King's_College_London)'s Theological Department in 1979 with a [Bachelor of Divinity](/source/Bachelor_of_Divinity) (BD) degree and an [Associateship of King's College](/source/Associateship_of_King's_College) (AKC), then trained for ministry at [Lincoln Theological College](/source/Lincoln_Theological_College) for a year. While there, he was made an assistant to the bishop for the Horn of Africa area in 2004 and a canon of [All Saints' Cathedral](/source/All_Saints'_Cathedral%2C_Cairo), [Cairo](/source/Cairo), in 2005.<ref name="ww" />

Between 2007 and 2011, he was the [area bishop](/source/area_bishop) for a new [episcopal area](/source/Episcopal_area_(Anglicanism)) (called the [Horn of Africa](/source/Horn_of_Africa), consisting of [Ethiopia](/source/Ethiopia), [Eritrea](/source/Eritrea), [Djibouti](/source/Djibouti), [Somaliland](/source/Somaliland) and [Somalia](/source/Somalia))<ref name="ct" /> in the [Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East](/source/Episcopal_Church_in_Jerusalem_and_the_Middle_East) Diocese of Egypt<ref name="no10" /> (based in Addis Ababa).
