He grew up in [New Ulm, Minnesota](/source/New_Ulm%2C_Minnesota). After attending [Bethany Lutheran College](/source/Bethany_Lutheran_College) in [Mankato, Minnesota](/source/Mankato%2C_Minnesota), he earned a Bachelor of Music in Composition from [St. Olaf College](/source/St._Olaf_College) in [Northfield, Minnesota](/source/Northfield%2C_Minnesota). At St. Olaf he studied composition with [Arthur Campbell](/source/Arthur_Campbell_(musician)) and performed with the [St. Olaf Choir](/source/St._Olaf_Choir) under [Kenneth Jennings](/source/Kenneth_Jennings_(conductor)) and [Anton Armstrong](/source/Anton_Armstrong). He has written and composed music for ''Lessons With Hypatia'', a fictionalized historical account of the philosopher [Hypatia](/source/Hypatia) and the burning of the [Library of Alexandria](/source/Library_of_Alexandria) for music theater, and ''The Soulless'', a work for music theater set about love, death, and discovering joy in the unexpected. He regularly organizes and conducts performances and recordings of music for chamber chorus.
